Fascinating! You know, when I first heard it, I kind of thought that it was about social anxiety... so I wasn't TOO far off the mark, I guess.
It's so rare that you hear a song like this on the radio, and quite frankly, I'd like to see more of it. I mean, you look at the Hot 100 right now, and it's filled to the brim with breakup songs (Stronger, Part of Me, Payphone, Somebody That I Used to Know, Titanium, Blow Me One Last Kiss, etc.), and I'm tired of hearing the same message being repeated to me ad nauseum; I'm stronger without you, I'm an independent woman, I don't need you anymore, you can't bring me down, blah, blah blah...
...and then, out of nowhere, in steps timid little Ellie Goulding, singing about how she still sleeps with a night light.
It's actually kind of funny that she'd be so open about what most consider to be a childish fear, let alone write a song about it. Though it's not as embarrassing when you consider that fear of the dark is a very primal fear, one that goes back to the Stone Age. We humans are very sight- oriented creatures, and when we have that sense taken away from us, it puts us at a huge disadvantage. It was only natural for us to fear the unknown, since in that time one wrong turn could send you right into the jaws of a saber toothed tiger.
And really, all of us fear the dark to some extent. Think about it; can you name a single horror movie you've seen in recent memory that shot everything in broad daylight? Probably not. Because everything becomes scarier when you shroud it in darkness.
...WOW, did I go off topic there.
