Nothing in "Applause" is easy to relate to. One will never find themselves being a "Koons" or basically anything that is said in the song. "Applause"'s strength is that she took the route of a very generic hook/chorus, against electro-pop production, hoping that will connect with the listener. Which it will, and has as the article/iTunes/radio shows. And for myself, since I don't really care what she's saying in the verses, nor really understand them (vocally).
"Roar" however both holds the quality of having Top 40 qualities, plus the listener being able to relate to the song (which is why it'll succeed easily on formats like Hot AC).

People are just too stupid and shameful to realize how much they relate to Applause. This generation was raised on American Idol and TRL, so we're clearly going to be obsessed with fame and all of the glory it comes with. That hunger for fame and greatness runs deep, and has shaped our society into what it is today. The same drive for fame is the reason we have any idea who Katy and Gaga are in the first place; it's omnipresent and something we all share as children of the New Age.
Roar's false sense of bravery is briefly relatable to the confused, heart broken girls out there who aren't too bright and don't want to think too much about what they're listening to. They'll have moved on to Little Mix' "Wings" soon enough though, and that's why I don't think either of these songs is going to particularly outshine the other.
