Are you really trying to tell my DL (which is a soul/folk country influenced song with a little twang) is more country than Vice, probably the most country song on country radio right now? I understand you probably don't listen to country, but that should be even more reason for you to not speak on it.

People keep throwing back to Daddy Lessons' "soul" and "folk" elements as if that makes it ~other. How are the heavy pop and rock influences in country (which is seen in most popular country songs right now) of the last decades not disqualifying yet having heavy soul and folk (the two feeder genres that CREATED country ) influences somehow are disqualifying? Daddy Lessons has so many more elements of country in its earliest, purest and most traditional form:
Come tf on. That makes no sense. I'm not even saying that Vice isn't country, but the reasons for disqualifying Daddy Lessons just don't hold water.
They've been white-washing country music for decades. Bey comes along and gives a true throwback country jam and people want to claim it's not representative of the genre. Of course these people have no historical knowledge of the genre.
Anyway, still don't know why people are discussing them rejecting a song she never submitted.
Um, country has no origins in soul? It was derived from Appalachian folk music with blues influences. We're talking about country in its current form, anyways. You don't decide whether a song is country or not based on the genres that influenced it a hundred years ago You're right, country has shifted more towards pop and rock, not towards the New Orleans sound Bey adopted. That in itself isn't a disqualifier, but there's other reasons it didn't get nominated (#1 being that it wasn't submitted )
Vice is without a doubt both better and far more country than Daddy Lessons. DL is a great song, don't get me wrong, but there were dozens of better country songs released this year and the Grammys nominated them. You can't throw a fit because your ~infallible~ fave decided to pick up some new genres as a hobby this year and not all of them were the best songs released in those genres.
We don't even know with certainty whether she submitted or not; the only thing we have is speculation. I personally think it's likely that she submitted the album version and intends to submit the live version next year -- she has done this before on more than one occasion and it doesn't make much sense to me that she would submit DHY to rock and not attempt DL with country. And when I say "disqualifier" I mean the general judgment of whether it can or cannot count as a country song. Soul is the mainline derivative of blues, but if we want to be purely technical, yes -- it has blues elements as well.
People acting as if this song which throws back to more traditional forms is alien makes no sense and just indicates to me that people aren't evaluating the song itself but who its associated with; country is notoriously territorial and unaccepting of ~outside artists. But whatever, now we're moving the goal posts from it flat out "doesn't sound country enough" to "it doesn't sound like modern country" and I'm not tail chasing today, so you can have it.

This is some legit BS. In order for a country song to be considered country, it has to sound like modern country instead of original country? Says who? Stop with these silly ass excuses. Just like there are many acceptable forms of rock, pop, dance, hip hop, and RnB, there are different acceptable forms of country. The problem isn't that the song isn't country enough. The problem is that Beyoncé is singing it.
I also find it hilarious that the same people who whine that Beyoncé, or any pop artist, isn't versatile enough; doesn't go outside the box; hasn't changed since their debut, etc. is now up in arms claiming she "picked up some new genres as a hobby". Pfft. Make your mind up, do you want artists to be versatile and make different types of music, or do you want them to "stay in their lane"?
There's far less forms of country than rock, pop, etc because the culture surrounding country has a kind of "purist" mentality. Soul wasn't even a genre was country came about, and above all, my point is Beyonce didn't get the nomination because there were dozens of better country songs released during the eligibility period. Whether DL is a pure country song or not is irrelevant, but it's not for those trying to make that claim. Not in its traditional OR modern form.

Well I'm not sure what "original country" means to you, but you realize that there are several categories in place for ~traditional~ sounding country music in the American Roots category?
American Roots
Best American Roots Performance
Best American Roots Song
Best Americana Album
Best Bluegrass Album
Best Blues Album
Best Folk Album
Best Regional Roots Music Album
I know they're mostly only albums, but the fact that the committee has these separate categories tells you something about their classification system. So yeah, COUNTRY really does kind of mean modern country...

You can have a word with those people, but that's not me. Daddy Lessons and Don't Hurt Yourself are my favorite Bey songs basically ever, I just don't think either are the best in their supposed genre.

As a Hive, this is tea. Pick and choose your battles; this one isn't worth it. Not sure why y'all are throwing such fit over the Grammys when she has 20 of them, and 9 nominations for this year alone. **** happens.
