holyground's "artist" trinity
katy perry
Katy Perry, the hit-churning machine. Though that has been a constant throughout her career, other things changed. Back during her debut (or sophomore album if you decide to count that gospel thing), she was much more like the playful bitch who worked in some dirty bar, and now she's this huge pop tart that is effortlessly slaying the charts.
Besides, why am I even doing a trinity on her when like, I don't even like her? She barely has any personality or artistic value in her music, only creates basic bops and writes horrible lyrics. and can't sing too
But hey, she's my tenth most played artist apparently. So with this trinity, lemme walk through Katy's "artistic" evolution throughout the years and also contradict myself as I prove myself wrong about my hatred towards the female MJ.
Naughty chick: Personality
I Kissed a Girl
"it felt so wrong, it felt so right, don't mean i'm in love tonight"
She has had thousands of hits, but this is probably her most iconic one. This ruled the charts 6 years ago, which seems like a really really long time looking back now. But who would've thought such a song would've been played on radio, let alone go to #1? This was where Katy was different from her pop contemporaries back then. She was edgy and wasn't afraid to be out there. That was what made her so compelling for her first era.
Candy girl: Insight
Teenage Dream
"let me get your heart racing, in my skin tight jeans, be your teenage dream tonight"
With her second album, she started to move towards a more GP-friendly, radio-ready pop girl image. She was much more subtle than before and the songs just sounded like they were meant for the radio. But that doesn't mean that there weren't any incidents where the music served the song well. Teenage Dream is a prime example. The music creates this surreal realm that oozes with nostalgia and feels. In 20 years time when I reminisce back on my teenage years, this will be the song I'll run to. So hey, even though she has many lame mindless tracks (looking at you Last Friday Night), she is totally capable of making fun pop music that can truly connect.
Inspirational preacher: Complexity
Choose Your Battles
"you are my hurt locker lover, keep me walking on a wire, don't know when you'll blow"
With Prism, it's evident that she's growing up and getting more mature. Not only is the subject matter maturing, the writing too has improved. Most of her songs are bogged down by uninspired, cliched and awkward writing, but it is much less evident in this album, and especially this song (except for the cliches though...). This is such a good closer, proving to us that she is capable of not serving cringeworthy stuff.
Though there is much to yearn for back when she started off, it's not like she's going off the right track anyway. I'd like to see a more mature Perry, as she transcends into real legit adulthood. And for me, as much as there are faults to her music, she can really make some good bops. So I'm sure for years to come I will still be listening to her music. The best has yet to be, right?
Musickid203
A star was born on March 1, 1987 and her name is Kesha Rose Serbert. Miss Serbert is a critically acclaimed singer-songwriter and rapper. A singer-song writer who sang background for American Superstar Paris Hilton for her single "Nothing in This World" , Australian group The Veronicas "This Love", appeared in Flo Rida's 2009 number one smash "Right Round", appeared in Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl" video, and sang background for Britney Spears' "Lace and Leather". As a young girl, Kesha played the Saxophone, Trumpet, she was apart of her school's marching band, and started a band with her brother Lagan. Don't let the pop sound fool you, this girl is a musical genious! At the age of 17 Kesha dropped out of school after being persuaded by Dr. Luke and Max Martin to pursue a career in music.
Ahh! The song that has started it all. Tik Tok is the song that has put Ke$ha on the map, it has sold about 14 million copies and spent 9 weeks at number one becoming the second best-selling single in digital history. This song is also on Kesha's first album Animal. The song has a carefree and tells you not to let anything down which gave K$ her image of being nonchalant and a crazy wild child.
After the release of Animal Kesha released an EP called Cannibal, this song is one of the singles. Now, before we all start making conclusions about who Ke$ha is based off of what we hear on the radio, her music actually speaks volumes louder than your speakers. I chose We R Who We R because of the message behind it. In the wake of news that bullying had led to mass suicides of of the young homosexual community, Kesha wrote the song in aspirations that it would become a pride anthem. The song is intended to inspire people to be themselves, and as a celebration of anyone deemed quirky or eccentric. Not only that, it's a great song to sing and dance to and the message behind it makes it even better. At then end of the day, You are who you are.
Y'all don't know the half of this industry. Kesha (now ridden of the "$") wrote this song about her controlling producer, Dr. Luke. Kesha stans (known as Animals) have set up and signed petitions to let Kesha "free" of Dr. Luke. Animals believe that Luke is preventing Kesha from growing as an artist, as I do too. It is alleged that Dr. Luke is the reason Kesha has went to rehab because of her eating disorder, it is reported that he told Kesha her body is built "like a refrigerator". As a fellow Animal, this is unacceptable and I look forward to Kesha's new album and now that she is out of rehab, I can 100% say she is here to SLAY.
Before I am judged on my entry I would like to add quick insight on my time and effort that went into everything. Today I took a day off of school to work on important things such as projects, book reports, research paper, studying, and other rigorous tasks. This has been one of them, also I spent most of my time going through Kesha's discography trying to pick the right storyline to go with my trinity. Correspondingly I spent time reading up on Kesha (as the rules for this round implies) and spent some time in her Base (Collin knows). Not to mention how much I've typed.
I decided to do some of her well known songs through her careers, I went back to 2009 and works my way up like a timeline. Up until know Kesha may be working on a new album so I thought I would end my trinity with Kesha cutting her ties with Dr. Luke and finding her new sound. Thanks for reading!
Kyle.
Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter is an American recording artist and actress. Born and raised in Houston, Texas, she performed in various singing and dancing competitions as a child, and rose to fame in the late 1990s as lead singer of R&B girl-group Destiny's Child. Managed by her father Mathew Knowles, the group became one of the world's best-selling girl groups of all time. A self-described "modern-day feminist", Beyoncé's songs are often characterized by themes of love, relationships, and monogamy, as well as female sexuality and empowerment. Throughout a career spanning 16 years, she has won 17 Grammy Awards and sold over 118 million records as a solo artist and 60 million with Destiny's Child, making her one of the best-selling music artists of all time.

Album: I Am Sasha Fierce (November, 2008)
Single Number: 3
"I know you read the paper - the one that they call a queen"
Female empowerment and independence are two very prominent topics in Knowles's music, and this track showcases them flawlessly. Beyoncé's lyrics are all about how men constantly underestimate her in the industry, yet she remains staying on top of the game, annihilating the competition effortlessly. This song also flaunts Bey's rapping skills associated with her sassy alter ego Sasha Fierce. Rap is one of the many genres Ms. Knowles excels at.

Album: Beyoncé (December, 2013)
Single Number: 2
"He popped all my buttons and he ripped my blouse; he Monica Lewinski'd all on my gown"
The most recent song on this list, Partition illustrates the erotic story of a couple (most likely Jay-Z and Yoncé themselves) where the woman will do anything it takes to please her mate. Partition is controversial among fans and critics alike because of it's extremely provocative lyrics especially since Knowles is rarely graphic in her songs. The music video adds to the controversy of this immaculate song by presenting scenes of Beyoncé in revealing outfits/poses and Jay-Z watching eagerly.
v u l n e r a b l e bey
Album: B'Day (September, 2006)
Single Number: N/A
"I don't know why you love me, and that's why I love you. You catch me when I fall; accept me flaws and all."
As Sal Cinquemani of Slant Magazine stated, "'Flaws and All' revealed Beyoncé at her most vulnerable. The song showed that even a superstar can struggle with insecurities and be in need of someone to love her." The song features Beyoncé talking about everything she hates or thinks her partner despises about her (spoiler alert: he doesn't hate those 'flaws!'). Some topics she discusses are her sudden mood swings, her neglect towards the anonymous man, and her craving for attention.
Beyoncé Knowles truly can do it all: different moods, topics, genres... you name it, she can destroy it in the best way possible!

Madonna's childhood was not the most pleasant one, as her mother died when she was just five years old. Her father eventually remarried, which brought more troubles for Madonna because her relationship with her step-mother was not the best one.
When she was a teenager, she headed to New York City with only twenty dollars in her pocket and the dream of making it big. Madonna struggled to make ends meet in the city, taking whatever jobs she could attain, including posing nude for photographs. She soon started dating a man named Dan Gilroy, with whom she eventually formed the band the Breakfast Club. Madonna soon broke up with Dan, left the band, and began her solo career. She became a hit in the clubs, releasing a string of singles, including "Everybody," "Lucky Star" and "Holiday." During this time, Madonna was signed to Sire Records and began her trek to the top of the music world and to become the the most successful female singer of all time. Since then, Madonna has released several studio albums, 12 to be exact.
Madonna have been in the music industry for 30 years [longer than some of today's pop girls have been alive.]. She has influenced the world of music not only by her songs and powerful lyric messages, but also by her provocative attitude and outfits.
QUEENofPOP LUCKY STARfromMADONNA (1983)*
contains excerpts from Hung Up ("Confessions On A Dance Floor", 2005)
Madonna's career started in the downtown club scene where she began to make a name for herself on the dance floor. Songs like "Lucky Star" were well received in the clubs. 20 years later, Madonna released "Confessions On A Dance Floor" which had a similar impact, but instead of performing in clubs, Madonna turned stadiums and arenas into dance floors.
I picked this live mash up because it shows the contrast between two different eras that are separed by +20 years, but also shows how Madonna is still slaying in the Dance/Club scene after all those years.
Other songs/albums you may like: Turn Up The Radio ("MDNA", 2012), Into the Groove ("Like a Virgin", 1984) and Music ("Music", 2002)
QUEENofCONTROVERSY AMERICAN LIFEfromAMERICAN LIFE (2003)
Whether from a provocative performance at the VMAs to singing in front of burning crosses, explicit music videos and referring drugs in her album titles (MDMA), Madonna's career has been characterized by controversy.
This song is basically her view on what the U.S has become, about how "American Life" is defined by negative things like superficiality, greed, materialism, etc.
The video, on the other hand, is more about how war is glorified in the media. The video was released around the same time George W. Bush ordered the invasion of Iraq. Both song and video received backflash from the media that ended up in a radio/TV ban.
Integrity. What I admire most about Madonna is that she stands for what she believes and doesn't back down.
Other songs/albums you may like: Erotica ("Erotica", 1992), Beat Goes On ("Hard Candy", 2008) and Like A Prayer ("Like A Prayer", 1989)
QUEENofREINVENTION SKY FITS HEAVENfromRAY OF LIGHT (1998)
Madonna started working with the record producer Babyface for her seventh studio album, Ray Of Light, but after a few months Madonna decided that the collaborations were not going in the musical direction she wanted for the album. According to Babybace, the songs "had a 'Take a Bow-ish' kind of vibe, and Madonna didn't want, or need, to repeat herself."
Madonna's albums are strongly different from each other in style and sound. I picked this song (and album) because when I listen to it, I think I'm listening to a complete different artist.
Other songs/albums you may like: La Isla Bonita ("True Blue", 1986) and Human Nature ("Bedtime Stories", 1994)

KELLY CLARKSON FROM FORT WORTH TO HOLLYWOOD
The story of how an unknown girl from Texas became one of the biggest names in pop music.
The year is 2002; America is witnessing the birth of a pop culture phenomenon - a new reality competition show titled American Idol, which gives undiscovered singers across the country the chance to sing before America and potentially end up with a record deal if they win. It all started when a girl named Kelly Brianne Clarkson took a chance one day and auditioned.
Of course, we all know what happened next. She managed to make it to the live shows, and with each passing week she continued to capture the hearts of people all across America. On finale night, she stood beside Justin Guarini, not sure if she would win. To her surprise, she was crowned the first ever winner of American Idol. Little did she know, this was going to be the start of a lengthy career.
Chapter 01 - #Breakway
It wasn't until Kelly's sophomore album Breakaway that people really took notice of her awe-inspiring talent. Breakway spawned many hit singles, and truly solidified her as the pop / rock princess at the time. One of the notable standout singles from that era is Behind These Hazel Eyes, an angst-ridden pop / rock track about a scorned lover left to pick up the pieces of a broken relationship.
Chapter 02 - #Stronger
Kelly released her 3rd album, My December, in 2007; sales were lackluster and the album only had one moderate hit. Two years later in 2009, she released her fourth album, All I Ever Wanted, which was a return to pop music and put Kelly back atop her pop / rock pedestal. Her fifth album, Stronger, released in 2011, was where Kelly really shined. A perfect blend of pop and rock, with some darker tones and a slight country feel. The first single of the era, Mr. Know It All was a smash hit, and only increased her status as one of the icons of pop music.
Chapter 03 - #FromPopToCountry
Kelly started to make a name for herself in the Country music scene, having done duets with both Reba McEntire and Jason Aldean. In her Greatest Hits album, we heard a clear country influence in a couple of the new tracks that were included. Tie It Up has been confirmed to be the first single from her forthcoming seventh studio album, which is said to be primarily country. Tie It Up is a great look at how Kelly has changed her sound, and also shows how versatile her discography is.
Chapter 04 - #TheFuture
In October of 2013, Kelly married her fiance Brandon Blackstock. Blackstock is Country music icon Reba McEntire's stepson. In November of 2013, Kelly announced that she is pregnant with her first child, and in January of 2014, announced that it's going to be a girl.
Kelly has many titles under her belt - American Idol winner, multiplatinum recording artist, wife, and soon, mother. With her seventh studio album slated for a late 2014 release, she's sure to have her hands full. And to think, none of this would've happened if her friends hadn't encouraged her to audition for American Idol, the show that made her from a nodody into a somebody.
I like what you did with Kesha, Musickid. Nice work, I knew you could do it!
Sonically, there are other aspects to Kesha that are missing but you got the picture and did well!
Y'ALL. You must vote two people to kill off! Otherwise you ain't eligible for rebirth
