Well my problem with that theory is Cloverfield was never a secret monster movie. From the get go we knew what it was, the hype was around seeing the actual monster. So it doesn't make sense to me that they'd try to hide there being a monster when, apparently, so many anticipated a follow-up. If anything they'd want to sell a bigger and better monster.
Also I think if that were the case, they wouldn't have done screenings at all and just dropped that first trailer.
Then you have how they decided to make it Cloverfield related in the middle of production, which the lead actress has said wasn't anything major. Which points to how it's impossible they just randomly decided to include a monster within the 3 months they were shooting.
I think the relation will be based on the air raid at the end of Cloverfield and its aftermath on wherever they're located. Possibly setting up for a real sequel.
The Reddit screener says the film ends with her driving to see a destroyed Chicago skyline - but Cloverfield happened in New York. So maybe they have a direct sequel concept to have events take place in Chicago and the monster never died in the air strike?
