He got murdered by the Dothraki because he kept insisting on his rights and treating them like his slaves without understanding that overseas he literally has no power because they don't believe in such rules.
Joffrey wasn't next in line. Viserys & Daenerys are from a whole different family (Targaryens) that used to rule the Seven Kingdoms. Their father, however, was a really crazy and mad king which is why others (Ned Stark, Baratheon) united to battle him and succeeded. Only Daenerys and Viserys could escape overseas when they were still little.
Baratheon then claimed the throne as he defeated the king and became the new one. Joffrey is his son with Cersei which is why he's the next one in line (, though he doesn't know that Joffrey in fact is a product of incest).
). The ones living there are much more resistant towards cold which is why they'd have better chances to survive a Winter once it does come.
