I don't think it was shady at all. MTV just thanked her for watching and tweeting--Lord knows they needed more viewers and who better than the Queen of Twitter to give them a boost in publicity. I'm not saying Gaga quadrupled their viewers or anything but she does have a significant impact, especially given that this seems to be an "off-year" so to speak for big time VMA players (Bey, Brit, Gaga). I don't think they sound desperate, but they definitely need her next year. At the end of the day, Gaga brings in the viewers and, ultimately, the money--whether it's television, magazines, news articles, or worldwide touring.
She probably stanned for Katy.
