Robot is kind of an EVENT song in Miley's discogiraffe. It's more honest, raw and ruthless than anything she's ever released. The only contender in the same sense would be Drive, but I think Robot is purely anger/frustration while Drive is more heartbreak/abandonment.
Literally every lyric serves a purpose/imagery and she pulls off the Robot metaphor with aplomb! That and with the production, she kinda did the combination of disco and rock and roll that so strongly influenced Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" a year later! Her vocals are gritty and distorted as if she really is a glitched out machine. The video could have been darker than anything from the Bangerz era, she could have alluded to the Disney monarch programming conspiracies and played a slave cyborg who kills her handlers.
UghT. What a good song. Can't believe I forgot it existed until yesterday.
Its been like this from the start,
One piece after another to make my heart
You mistake the game for being smart,
Stand here, sell this and hit your mark.
But the sound of the steel and the crush and the grind
It all screams 'who am I to decide my life?'
But in time it all dies there's nothing left inside
Just rusted metal that was never even mine
