Not to be snarky but hopefully this single's performance teaches Katy a lesson. She has to step with her best foot forward always. Look how the Birthday video and this single's release derailed the era. I think she got too comfortable thinking she could take some risks.

Nah, I think Birthday was a perfect single choice but the video ruined it.

Unconditionally is meh. I never truly connected with it but it didn't do poorly.

Unconditionally did poorly for her second single. Shoulda been Dark Horse, then this song or WOA. She's lucky Dark Horse took off or this era would be a mess.

"Birthday" is more 80's influenced and I don't think it's retro feel had anything to do with why it was released. It's an absolute earworm but I agree with you though that it was a bad choice because it felt redundant for Katy. I think Capitol thought it was at least strong enough to keep Prism's momentum going while Katy was on tour and wanted to save the stronger singles for when she'd be able to promote.
