I believe she's doing it to build a larger-than-life atmosphere, preserve some sense of mystery and sex appeal, and to generally avoid all possible PR blunders with an "I'm above that" attitude.
Based on what I've been reading, Adele's team is working on something very similar for 25. They've lined up a lot of promotion, but it hinges mostly on a small set of limited interviews + performances. They want to preserve a sense of mystery and heartache.
I think it's the ideal strategy once you reach a certain level of saturation. Taylor is working wonders running the opposite approach, but she occasionally says stupid things and her public presence can be so big that it simply turns people off who might otherwise purchase her music occassionally.

Now that she's going on that one Battle Lip Sync show, I think we'll start to see a return back to the other end of the spectrum.
People don't buy stuff they can't see/hear/feel. Either by word of mouth or hard advertising. There's a reason why marketing exists.
