Well, the price of living in Japan is different (i.e. higher) therefore when matched against the US dollar, which it is stronger than, then the US economy in general, which it is more expensive than...things get really expensive, really fast.
plus there's tons of stores that are super deliberate about charging more on shipping & stuff because of what I could imagine is only xenophobia or just some warped idea of quality (if you pay more, it won't get stuck on a plane for 2 weeks [yeah right])
plus they have a thing where CD prices are set at a fixed rate until after a certain date passes, so there's that. you might notice those dates on OBI strips & the back of CDs if you buy them from there.
For some reason they're stingy as hell about recorded media (and reluctant to adopt to digital for some batsh!t stupid reason), and yet you can get designer hoodies for $29 and feed a family for a week for less than it costs to eat out in America.
