D & D have ruled out a prequel or taking a break in filming, they don't want to kill the momentum they have and they know that that the young members of the cast will become adults before long, not to mention some of the key actors aren't going to want to be under contract until the start of the next decade (I'm thinking especially of Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke here). Personally, I'm not all that bothered about which ends first, I started watching the show before getting into the books, and I love both; I will watch or read as soon as episodes or books become available to do so.
Readers who want to read the books first can decide to hold out on the show if they do overtake, it will be hard to avoid the cultural discussion admittedly, but still, no in forcing you to watch.
Also, as unlikely as this suggestion from George RR Martin might be, I would totally be here for it; imagine those final battles for control of the Iron Throne on the big screen
Quote:
“Do we run for seven years? Do we run for eight? Do we run for 10? The books get bigger and bigger [in scope]. It might need a feature to tie things up, something with a feature budget, like $100 million for two hours. Those dragons get real big, you know.”

Considering HBO were considering doing this style of adaption with Stephen King's The Dark Tower series, I don't think it could be beyond the realm of possibility as long as one of the big studios invests in production and distribution (and considering how popular the show is, I can't imagine that would be hard). A gay can dream.
