I'd always been really skeptical about Titanic's prospects. There just isn't much of a market for re-releases outside of family films (e.g., Disney) and established, fanboy-driven franchises (e.g., Star Wars) even with the 3D gimmick.

Where it looks to benefit from the most is in foreign markets that have developed significantly since the time of its initial release such as Russia and China.

"Titanic" did do well overseas.

American Reunion placed second for Easter weekend domestically, followed by James Cameron's 3D makeover of Titanic, which earned $17.4 million, putting its five-day debut at $25.7 million. Overseas, Titanic 3D turned in a strong $35.5 million from 84 territories, giving it a strong shot of ultimately earning $100 million at the foreign box office.

Warner Bros.' Wrath of the Titans was the No. 1 film internationally, earning $43 million from 60 markets for a hearty foreign cume of $152.8 million, more than double its soft 10-day domestic total of $58.9 million.

Domestically, Titanic 3D -- which cost $18 million to convert -- couldn't match last fall's 3D rerelease of The Lion King, which opened to a stellar $30.1 million on its way to grossing $94.2 million domestically. Titanic, handicapped by its lengthy running time (195 minutes), did open higher than the recent 3D rerelease of George Lucas' Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith ($22.5 million) and Beauty and the Beast ($17.8

Paramount president of domestic marketing and distribution Megan Colligan said Titanic 3D isn't a limited engagement, and expects the rerelease to have exceptionally good word of mouth. "There's something very special about the movie and seeing it again on the big screen is special experience," she said.

The next 3D re-release to make a big splash will be "The Little Mermaid." I can't even begin to describe how badly I want to see it on the big screen and I think many share that feeling.

Hehe, not at all. Re-releases very rarely have longevity past the first weekend.

Titanic opens in China on Tuesday, should be the deciding factor as to whether or not it can end up crossing $2 Billion WW cumulatively.

Anyway, i think the massiveness of Titanic as years went by contributed to its not-so-stellar sales today. I mean, everyone already saw it 'cause of the hype surrounding it as years went by! Like, everyone saw it multiple times on tv channels and dvds and everywhere. Why still go to theatres if you already memorized every line and scene? Lol.

"Cabin in the Woods" received a 'C' Cinemascore. Which is not surprising. Those expecting pure horror thrills and suspense will be disappointed. The scares are quickly sacrificed in favor of meta horror movie deconstruction aimed at genre fanboys rather than the wide, general horror audience. But what's very encouraging is that it increased 3% on Saturday, which almost never happens for horror films.

But who would expect Titanic to beat Avatar? Seriously.
Avatar was a whole new movie + it made more money off 3D prices..When Titanic first released there was no 3D. so i wasn't surprised when it beat it's records.. and of course people wouldn't go rush to the movie theater to see Titanic again in 3D when its ALWAYS on cable.

I can't wait to see The Little Mermaid on the big screen. I actually love all these re-releases. I saw Titanic for the first time ever last week. It was amazing and the cinema was nearly completely full. I'm seeing it again next week
