Method is more than just staying in character all the time, that's just one type of method acting. There are very many different schools of it. For some, it is about becoming the character. For others, it's about the character becoming you. You deconstruct the subtext of your character and you use sensory cues that make you feel a certain thing. Sometimes it is music, sometimes it's an image, a memory. You harness these emotions and use them to create a very natural performance because you are essentially playing your raw feelings and emotions.
People who take it to the extreme like DDL and Leo DiTortellini in The Revenant annoy the hell out of me though. No point in going that far. Poor Paul Dano in There Will be Blood.
