I'm actually quite surprised that it has such a low score. While we're on the topic of consistency, I just want to throw it out there that TEOM starts off REALLY strong and slowly dwindles and progressively becomes a little lackluster. That may just be my opinion though, I've never been all that in love with EOM.
I think with singles like WBT and SIO leading the album, critics were probably expecting something a lot more catchy and upbeat then what was ultimately delivered. I remember she got a lot of crap for her "poor" vocal performances back then too. I think people, including critics, were expecting something HUGE from this album since it was her comeback after Glitter and CB flopped. I have a feeling that the disappoint generated from the fact that it wasn't up-to-par with Rainbow, Butterfly and Daydream had a negative impact on a lot of critics. It always sucks when critics compare your work to previous work instead of just focusing and appreciating your current work for what it is. I have a
feeling that's what happened in TEOMs case- at least for a few critics.
By the time Memoirs came around critics probably weren't expecting too much out of her, or at least not as much as they use to. Which gave it a bit of leverage. That's just my own little conspiracy theory though.
+ MOIA has less reviews than TEOM, and that alone can have a big impact on the overall average. TEOM has more positive reviews than MOIA but it has
one negative review where as MOIA has none. That alone might have been what put M ahead.
I think TEOM deserves a 68-74. 64 seems
really low.
