Perhaps unsurprisingly, all of this year's nominees are women. This is the polar opposite of typical country awards shows, where men typically dominate despite releasing utter crap. This year, the ladies focussed upon heartbreak in their songs, although each addresses the topic in a very different way. "Mama's Broken Heart," written by nominee Kacey Musgraves, is a sassy song that addresses the differences between the way that two generations of women deal with a break-up. "Red" is Taylor Swift's anthemic ode to a relationship that burned too hot to survive, while the understated "Begin Again" finds Her moving on from the roller coaster relationship described in "Red." Carrie Underwood's "See You Again" takes a slightly different approach, as she sings about her hopes of reconnecting with a loved one that she has lost. Kacey Musgrave's "Merry Go Round" is perhaps not a heartbreak song in the traditional sense, but one could argue that it addresses the heartbreaking complacency of small town life.
Here are the nominees for Best Country Solo Performance.
