I don't care what you think is best I was just suggesting there needs to be more diversity and there needs to be a BALANCE!!!!! (and, mostly, I just wanna be a judge). Just like I need something huge to balance my gigantic nose on and that's why I lean on Jackson and his ego. Luckily it makes me consider us close, but mostly only in proximity and not relationship. Where's that bandcamp at?

Lord the essays!
I took four years of critique classes at a conservatory, so giving reviews and feedback is nothing new to me; ESPECIALLY how people respond to them. Granted for music it's a lot easier to point out objectively wrong things like rhythm and intonation, people will fight to have different ideas with phrasing and dynamics and whatnot, which seems to be more in line with writing.
I'm not expecting to please everyone, and you're all more than welcome to your opinions, but in the case of reviews, I'm not just going to tell you what you want to hear, because that's not going to help you. As a first time PH judge, I've been trying more and more to pin down critiques that are more constructive and helpful, but as are the rest of you, I'm growing and learning.
Yes, this challenge is very restrictive, there's no way that it's not. But great songwriters are versatile, and that's what we're trying to show this season.
If you're struggling, I don't think it would be wrong to exaggerate some personal experiences. I have a creative writer friend who wrote a piece about suicide after dropping a goldfish. You probably shouldn't go that far, but exaggeration is a pretty common thing in art and writing.
Good luck!

If you need any extra advice on your past songs or how to go about new challenges (as well as extra tea!) drop by the dubtrack late nights. I'm always there giving out advice

Again just wanna say none of this was against you, or even Jackson. Just my own personal worries. Still think you're doing a great job and wish I was in, but, alas I'll have to fill the role of the annoying one nobody really knows why they're there but they accept it. Essentially im the homeless man of platinum hit.

Since everybody else is chiming in...
I'm new to this game but I essentially came in as a poet, and with the judges feedback [and from contestants] it's helped me to learn and adapt my meter/flow from structured poetry into song form. I think judges will agree that my first entry in this game was a straight up spoken word poem, but my recent work has improved a lot and flows more like a song now. So there are definitely some plus points to the feedback the judges give. The negative part of the feedback would be that having a group of people, nobody thinks the same, what one judge praises you for, another judge drags you for, but that's to be expected in all games. It's also hard when the judges and contestants interpret the challenges differently, but everybody has their own opinions and interpretations of words.
As for the challenges, I think they've good good.
Intros - was really helpful for a new player like me
Duet - the theme was open-ended
Pokemon - you were given a theme but the story you tell or what you adapt to the theme is open-ended
Sequel - restrictive in the sense that you need to mimic another's writing, but you can still put your own spin on the story
Writing Camp - this one was bad, not gonna lie, way too many impossible demands
Movie - great inspiration, broad list of choices, you are practically given a story to tell
So overall I think it's been good. There's been 2 that I found difficult but I still managed to do it and enjoyed what I came up with after. And there was a lot of players in this to begin with, so the turnaround to get that amount of feedback in a short space of time was great. I haven't watched/played any other seasons I can't comment if those were better, but it's not like this one has been a disaster, I think it's been fun actually lol.

I definitely think the reviews are great for newer writers. Jackson has always been good at that, even going back to S6. I'm glad people are enjoying it. I won't be a pessimistic pear

Not Clarkson talking about this week's challenge when clearly Pears has deeper issues and isn't even participating at this point
As for "objectively wrong things like rhythm" I just want to point out that including a trochee at the end of my 'chorus' last week was intentional and sounds great when sung to the melody I have That's my biggest gripe with meter stuff, which is why I'm looking forward to [redacted].

Yeah, my only complaint with the season is that I don't think we've been given much room to breathe. Great writers are versatile, but songwriting usually allows you to express yourself artistically. In the past three challenges, we've had to write for a past song, write for a different artist and write for a movie. This challenge is about expressing ourselves, but there's a restriction on how we can express ourselves. I don't have a problem with any individual challenge so much as the running theme. The constant restrictions feel more stifling than stimulating. Like Jackson said, I know it's impossible to please everyone, but this is my input. I think the game would help us more as songwriters if it allowed a bit more freedom.
I think the judges have all been great, and the reviews have been helpful. The season has been organized and straightforward, and I think it's been run well. This post isn't meant to attack anyone or the game itself; I've enjoyed this season a lot.

I'm having trouble writing this song because i'm not sure how forward/hard-hitting to make it, or whether I should just use metaphors and suggestive wording instead.

I for one think none of this would be an issue if everyone joined ATRL's Drag Race Season 03.

The good news is that this convo inspired me to start my song for the week. It's about Jackson, a member of my ATRL family
