Sorry, I thought we were talking about threads that had already died naturally (dropped to 2nd page). If I get in there late and I see the last few pages are an unreported mess, I just close it to prevent further reports and further bumps. I'm not gonna waste my time warning everyone.
If it's an active thread, it really depends on so many things. The number of reports that are coming from it, the quality of the discussion, is it still on topic, etc. Sometimes it's just easier to close it rather than go through every page and try and save the initial topic. In the end it's just a feeling that the thread is a pain and a snap decision to close it. When you do this for years it all becomes sort of automatic.
