CALVIN HARRIS - SWEET NOTHING (FEAT. FLORENCE WELCH)
'Sweet Nothing' released in late 2012, served as the 5th single from Calvin Harris' album, '18 Months'
It features vocals from Florence Welch, lead singer of the English band Florence + The Machine. Harris previously worked with the band in a remix of their single, 'Spectrum' Sweet Nothing is an EDM track, with love-strung vocals and a bouncy, ever-building beat. Lyrically, it talks about a romance with no depth, where the protagonist is receiving "sweet nothing".
I chose this song because it stuck out to me as one of Florence's only collaborations. Her souring vocals on the pre-chorus are a definite highlight on the track.
Critical reception of 'Sweet Nothing' was positive, with many critics praising its production and Welch's vocals. The song debuted at number one on the UK Singles Chart, marking Harris' first number-one single as main artist in the United Kingdom.

DRAKE - TAKE CARE (FLORENCE + THE MACHINE COVER)
Florence covered the song on November 25, 2011 during BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge. Before performing the song, lead singer Florence Welch announced: "This is pretty exciting because this is a song by one of my, well two of my, well three of my absolute favorite artists." Florence has always wanted to collaborate with Drake, she disclosed: "We've always been in different places and the time that we did end up in the studio together we ended up getting quite drunk together and there wasn't a song that came out of it".
Florence completely transforms this track and makes it her own. If I didn't know Drake's version and wasn't a fan I would think it was her band's! There were a couple other covers I was debating on submitting but this one is so enthralling, it didn't feel right to pass it up.

song has aged so well for me. It's impressive how a
13-year old girl managed to create a song that I, as a
20-year old male can shamelessly bop to.
Glory
Glory is a gospel classic that JoJo covered for
her 2014 EP, #LoveJo. Given that the most well
known version of the song is by the legendary
Kathleen Battle, JoJo had big shoes to fill. And
she pulled it off! I chose this song because of
how I felt when I first heard it. This EP was released
after over a year of absolute silence on JoJo's part.
We had no idea what was going on. Some of us
thought she had given up, defeated by industry politics.
And then she dropped the EP. Glory was the first song I
played. I remember literally shivering. Corny, but true.
I was so proud and happy and also so ruthlessly slayed.
To me, this is one of the most touching, passionate and
spine tingling vocal deliveries I've ever heard. Goosebumps.

This was the first song by Jessica that I actually bought, this was the song that made me interested in her discography and opened the doors to her as a person. I just love everything about this song, the lyrics, the production and their voices as they sing to each other. When the bridge hits, whew I just love to mouth (and low-key scream) with them.
Cover -
When I first listened to this song, I had no idea it was a cover of Cyndi Lauper's Time After Time, although I knew Cyndi's version too! Jessica's take makes it her own and that's what I love, she didn't try and do a karaoke version, she made it her song.
The Queen Of Pop breaks generational barriers and joins a fearless Miley on stage in this iconic countrified mashup of her 27th Top 5 hit "Don't Tell Me" and the anthemic "We Can't Stop". This MTV Unplugged performance is still one of my favorite moments from the Bangerz zeitgeist. Beyond the sex appeal and ever-provocative shock factor, I'm just glad these two outspoken, polarizing female rebels joined forces to celebrate their freedom so unabashedly. Pushing boundaries while being massively successful may be tricky - and there's nothing wrong with "playing it safe" - but I really hope exciting pop renegades like this pair never cease to exist.
"Don't Dream It's Over" (1986) is a song originally released by Australian rock band Crowded House. In this video, Miley Cyrus and Ariana Grande joined each other on an inflatable couch, dressed in onesies, to perform a flirty, stripped-down rendition of the 80s classic ballad for Cyrus’ charity foundation. The result was a flawless, gimmick-free performance that completely destroys the myth that current pop princesses cannot sing. Miley's brassy pop-Nashville twang is complemented perfectly with Ariana's sweet Mariah-esque melisma. An adorable duet.

COLLABORATIVE: ELLIE GOULDING X MADEON - STAY AWAKE
After the release of Halcyon, Ellie decided to experiment with other types of sounds. Teaming up with Madeon seemed to be the perfect choice, as they ended up bringing to the table a fresh EDM tune, something Ellie was quite unfamiliar with in the past. "Stay Awake" introduced us to the vibe of music Ellie had been wishing to create for a while now, and was ultimately the turning point in her musical direction.
The song itself is the ultimate feel-good party track based around a reckless relationship, them two conquering the world. "We don't have to wait till the morning, the sun will never go down"
An immense explosion of instrumental mixed in with the angelic-ness of Ellie's vocals, a track that'll simply never age. However Madeon's ace production is what really allowed this track to stand out, he managed to create a beat that'll still sound current in years to come, something that can be challenging in today's industry.
Up until the release of Halcyon Days in 2013, "Stay Awake" remained an exclusive bonus track on select versions of Halcyon, fortunately the track now has it's time to shine & be exposed for the casual Ellie listener to cherish and enjoy.
COVER: THE WEEKND - HIGH FOR THIS
Covers are essentially Ellie's forte, and there's absolutely no exception when it comes to her stunning rendition of The Weeknd's "High For This". With this track Ellie was able to experiment with elements of R&B whilst making it her own by tweaking the production & adding her charm.
It's not often that I find covers doing the original any justice, although with this track I'm blown away at how well she manages to pull it off. Ellie made sure to stay clear of the typical route other artists follow, which is using the same instrumental & often not putting much thought into it, usually resulting in the song sounding unfit for them. Nevertheless the originality put into this cover paid off excellently, as it sounds like it could fit right onto one of her own LPs.
After ranking up an impressive 14 million plays on Soundcloud, it's fair to say the cover has received an overall positive response, and has converted casual listeners into dedicated fans.

4A. The Collaborative Song - Satin Boys, Flaming Chic
This is a remix of Goldfrapp's song Satin Chic from their third album Supernature. It was remixed by The Flaming Lips (the band that Miley Cyrus worked with for Dead Petz) for a special release vinyl single. This is the closest to a collab that Goldfrapp has, but Satin Chic is one of my favorite songs from them and the remix is a completely new take on the song.
4B. The Cover Song - U.K Girls (Physical)
This is one of Goldfrapp's only recorded covers (though she did use a sample in Ooh La La, though it's not a direct cover) but I love me some Olivia Newton-John and it's from her first era which was when she was the most artistic IMO.
I chose Irresistible by Fall Out Boy featuring Demi because it shows some of Demi’s versatility as an artist. Demi started out as a pop-rock artist and over the course of her career she has experimented with differnt genres and sounds. This song takes it back to her pop-rock origin and provides a bit of nostalgia for her fans.
Demi’s cover of Hello by Adele has been praised by multiple media outlets and people because of her vocals. Demi's vocals always manage to shine throughout the songs she performs.

As she was also known recently as the queen of features by the entire ATRL, Christina has proved once again that she is one of the best in the music industry with "Say Something". Although the original version was good as well, and the duo managed to capture the emotion well, Christina was just the spark needed. As she is well known for her striking vocals, this time she tones it down to fit the melody made by Ian and Chad. She wanted to record the song because she liked the emotion that was transmitted by it, so in the end, a quiet, sad and heart touching ballad was made.
Although I know this is going to be extremely familiar from D.M.F.'s avatar, it is actually a highly acclaimed performance, making some of the best Grammy performances ever. It is definitely one of the high peaks in her career and an honour to make a tribute to the late James Brown. And she did it amazingly, in both his and her style and made it sound extremely personal. Just another performance in which Christina proves she is a master.

For the collab, I picked this song for another example of why Mariah is a versatile singer. This song is a hip-hop remix of her 13th #1 single, My All, which featured Lord Tariq, Jermaine Dupri, and Peter Gunz. The Loose Ends sample really made it in this song. This is one of her greatest remixes, this remix is special since she re-sung in this song so it sounds like a new song.

The Collaborative Song: Missy Elliott - Get Ur Freak On (Remix feat. Nelly Furtado)
Nelly has a couple of remarkable collaborations in her discography, namely like the smash duet with James Morrison, Broken Strings, a featuring with Flo Rida single, Jump, also with the #1 song Give It to Me by Justin Timberlake and Timbaland. But I chose this collaboration as my entry, Get Ur Freak On Remix with Missy Elliott as her definitive collaborative song because it showed the public the distinctive personality of Nelly as an artist. At the time of its release, it showed the promising career ahead of Nelly at that time, as she delivers as sing talk rapping and her distinctive near nasal tone. Its not for everybody, but it works for her! and thats what makes Nelly a unique artist of her own. This collab proved also a standout among Nellys collaboration, evidently when Missy Elliott performed the track with Katy Perry on the last years SuperBowl primetime peformance, some fans and watchers even anticipated, Nelly to pop out of nowhere and deliver her contributed verse! This may not have made a dent on the charts for the remix, but its ultimately one of her most memorable collaborations by far of her career yet!
Since, I chose a cover of Nelly (Calvin Harris Feel So Close) for last rounds Acoustic Theme, I decided to use her cover of Gnarls Barkleys Crazy. Once again, Nelly delivered an understated acoustic number with her own rendition as opposed to the soulful original. In this acoustic live setting, she coos every lyric like a swan song. This number focuses the delicacy of her vocals and from the first note to the last, you can tell that she made it her own. As usual on her covers, she lets her distinctive tone and vocal to be at the forefront of attention to the listeners ears. And once again she proved why her acoustic numbers and her cover versions are a worthy of a listen to! No doubt that in every cover that she does, she never fails to twist her rendition and make it the Nelly Furtado kind of way!
Collaborative work : Eminem - Love The Way You Lie ft. Rihanna
I strongly believe that this is one of the strongest songs that Robyn was included it, even if she only sings the hook.
The song follows the story of a violent relationship, but from unexpected perspective. It is, actually, narrated by the abuser (Eminem). Listeners get quite affected by the twists and turns in logic that run through the abusers mind as he attempts to explain, and even justify his behaviour.
Interestingly, listeners also get a glimpse of the moments of clarity in abuser's mind – the shame and the disturbing realisation of what it means to be a woman-beater. And it is this that makes Love the Way You Lie both fascinating and instinctively repulsive – this is not the ramblings of a deluded maniac but of a troubled man struggling to draw lines between love, fear, hate and anger...
The history of song is also surrounded by disturbing personal details from Rihanna's past relationship - we all know that she was a victim of domestic violence, so it's quite intriguing that she decided to collaborate with Eminem on this song.
Cover: Rihanna - Redemption Song (Bob Marley Cover)
Rihanna was only 18 years when she delivered this beautiful performance of Redemption. I'm loving this acoustic side of her even though it's old. Her voice is truly amazing and has progressed fantastically over the years and I love the way she sings this song. (If you're still convinced that she can't sing, just go and listen her voice around 3:00 )

To begin this round i have the arduous task of finding a cover hihi. With such tremendous amount of choice the true task is to elect the most worthy and i can think of none other but the quintessential and groundbreaking breakout, Daft Punk.
Beginning with an accapella rendition of "Technologic" the group is introduced sequentially, showcasing the individuality of their vocals as well as the harmony they develop as each fuse with the next. This style of set up familiarizes the members of Pentatonix with the audience, making it easy to differentiate their voices and appreciate the layers they add formed together. As the vocalists form one voice Kevin comes in and applies a futuristic hissing beat while Avi amplifies it as he transitions to a steady bass line. Scott smoothly croons "Get Lucky" before shifting into his soprano register to synchronize with Mitch and Kristi. With one airy whisper the tempo is smoothly reversed as Kristi serenades with her subtly emotive and alluring expression. Mitch takes control of the chorus for yet another momentum switch before the pinnacle of the performance. Pentatonix proceeds to pull off the most mesmerizing rendition of the signature "Harder, Better Faster, Stronger" by taking full advantage of their collective musical scale and simulating an electrifying automated symphony.
In following to contrast the falsetto Avi shows off the depth of his baritone while Kevin spits at a rapid-fire pace and Kristi creates a faint harmony of "Around The World". The final sequence consists of a fusion of all the previous songs "One More Time" into a cohesively mixed, anthemic masterpiece.
The song showcases every member of Pentatonix in the solo spotlight and as support, exhibiting their versatility and diversity as an ensemble. The composition of this stunning A capella arrangement also awarded them a grammy in 2015 for its excellence.
Quite unlike the other half of this challenge, I am not spoiled for choice here.
When you have a group with three to four vocalists on a track simultaneously it can be difficult to mingle yet another voice into an already harmonized blend. For those reasons alone it's abundantly clear that the best companion for collaboration is the music and styling of the whimsical Lindsey Stirling.
Weaving herself into the instrumental she supports Kevin's Cello with her own strings, subtlety in the verse then soothingly in the pre-hook. Her gentle harmony complements the throbbing bass before abruptly embracing and rising above the beat now backed by Kevins vocal percussion.
This alternation of production leadership coupled with Scott's rapid lyrical tune creates a very interesting and dynamic tempo for the song.In verse two Lindsay tailors herself to play the additional role of providing tension and suspense melodically, generating buildup for the breakdown.
By the end of the middle eight Lindsay and Pentatonix have seamlessly entwined their sound, her serving as the support the and syncopation and them providing the melody and structure to make a beautiful and bangin' bop.
The Madonna and Massive Attack cover of Marvin Gaye's "I Want You" originated as a project for a compilation of artists covering the legend's works. Initially imagined as a Massive Attack song featuring Chaka Khan, the "I Want You" cover passed through a few hands before reaching Madonna in her post Bedtime Stories days. She recorded her vocals for the trip-hop inspired re-imagining of the classic. Not only was it the most praised song from an otherwise panned tribute album, but Madonna also loved it so much herself that she featured it on her own album Something To Remember (a compilation of ballads). Although I'm featuring it here as my choice cover song, it's also perhaps my favorite of her collaborations as well.
Throughout her career, Madonna has collaborated with artists ranging from Nicki Minaj and Lil Wayne to Prince and Nas, but her song "4 Minutes" with Justin Timberlake might be the best (and best known) of these collaborations. The Hard Candy single was released when I was a freshman in high school, and I still recall that my classmates once listened to the song during science class one morning (marking the first time I'd ever heard a Madonna song). "4 Minutes" was written by Madonna, JT, and Timbaland to convey a sense of urgency about the fact that we all have a finite amount of time on Earth, while also suggesting that we have fun and make the most of what time we have.

The two artists are friends, and with the song’s sweeping, soulful sound, it seemed only fitting to have Adele feature on the track. Although the song’s protagonists describe their relationship as “water and a flame,” in reality, Merriweather and Adele are a match made in Heaven. It is easy to note comparisons between “Water and a Flame” and Adele’s own “Chasing Pavements,” as both were produced by Eg White. With this collaboration, Adele gives us a refreshing change being that the song focuses on the viewpoints of two different people, while also staying true to her own sound. “Now you’re gone, there’s nothing else I want,” the duo sings on the gorgeously composed track. The song is topped off by a powerful and moving vocal delivery from both artists that conveys every bit of pain poured into the song’s composition, which is exactly why we love Adele – this further proves that Adele’s ability to convey so much emotion through her vocals is something she can do regardless of whether or not it’s her own song; she finds a way to relate and make us all relate as well.

Adele’s cover of Bob Dylan’s “Make You Feel My Love” is considered one of her best releases to date, and what surprised many is how easily she appears to make the song her own. Covering a song written by the legendary Bob Dylan and then recorded by a number of groundbreaking artists that range from Garth Brooks to Billy Joel is no easy task. However, Adele’s version is every bit as convincing as the original (if not more), and just as breathtaking. Being able to hear someone’s pain on a song that isn’t even their own is as heartbreakingly beautiful as it is comforting. Adele even revealed that “Make You Feel My Love” helped her communicate the message she was trying to convey on 19, and that it has since become the song she connects to the most emotionally during her concerts, because it reminds her of all the people in her life that she loves. Adele’s version is dependent mainly on piano and vocals, a quality comparable to the song that she would later come to consider her signature song, “Someone Like You.” In the final refrain, Adele’s emotion escalates thanks to the enthralling accompaniment of strings, before descending back into the song’s original air of simplicity, epitomized by what is primarily the piano and Adele’s voice. It’s almost as if you can hear the lump in her throat – the same one that you feel, because she just made you feel the exact same way. Her ability to be moved by these songs and move other people with them as well is truly incredible, and this song exemplifies this remarkable quality perfectly.

The collaborative song that I have selected is the folk-based ballad and lullaby, "Safe & Sound" by Taylor Swift featuring The Civil Wars. The song showcases Taylor's lower register and features the haunting vocal of The Civil Wars harmonizing throughout. The song written, by both Taylor and The Civil Wars, for the Hunger Games soundtrack was released towards the end of 2011 and later won a Grammy for Best Song Written for Visual Media.
However the key thing about this song and many of Taylor's other compositions is its lyrical content.
Taylor begins the song by introducing the idea of death and loss:

ROUND 4: COVER
The cover song that I have selected is "Drops of Jupiter", originally by Train. Taylor performed this song throughout her Speak Now World Tour. And I have selected this cover as it showcases Taylor's ability to take a song with lyrics she might not have written and completely make it her own. And by the way her fans responded to it on tour, make it heir own as well.
The song lyrically was conceived by Train's lead singer, Pat Monahan, which he wrote after his mother passed away as a way to convey the concept that even though her life on earth is over, she returned to him in spirit. With "drops of jupiter in her hair", his mother has been far out but has still returned. Although some of the verses are a bit questionable, Taylor manages to make them seem right at home with the rest of the song.
What might surprise many is how few quality covers Taylor has documented. As many of the solo covers are from her earlier tours with poor quality or from her more recent era. Although those ones are just a bit harder to submit as they contain the mass excitement of her audiences!
Sweetest Girl is one of my favorite early Nicki tracks, the lyrics, flow, and simple sweetness of the delivery of her lines really makes the message of the song shine. Whenever I listen I feel I can connect on an emotion level to the story she tells.

I also love how she addressed people discrediting her over her looks and for losing her essence but turns around and checks them for always being on the lookout for whatever she does regardless

Nicki has so many amazing features, but one has stood the test of time and still receives as much if not more praise now than when it was first released. Monster was a moment not just in her career, but for all female rappers, and rookies in general. Nicki was put on a track competiting with legends and moguls and not only did she completely body the track, she delivered the best verse on Kanye's work of art "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" leaving him with no choice but to proclaim it the best hip hop verse of all time. Regardless of just her contribution, each rapper brought their own flow and nailed the theme of the song where could you find a line as bizzare as
"I put the ***** in a sarcophagus
now she claiming that I bruise her esophagus"

Round Four: Part I | The Collaborative Song Hooverphonic ft. Esther Lybeert — Inhaler
This was the original demo of Inhaler featuring Esther Lybeert, one of the original members of the group who dropped out of the band on the day they were to sign their contract with Sony Music. I like this version far more than the original (which you can listen to here)because I never liked the vocals Liesje, who was brought into the band, did for their debut album A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular. I chose this because Hooverphonic rarely collaborate with others as far as I know. But most of the collaborations I could find were bad.. But this is good and maybe if Esther had stayed I would've enjoyed the album alot more because A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular is definitely in the bottom three of Hooverphonic's discography for me atleast. Devon said I could use demos so I did hehe!
Round Four: Part II | The Cover Song Hooverphonic — Unfinished Sympathy Covers: Massive Attack — Unfinished Sympathy
Hooverphonic covered Massive Attack's Unfinished Sympathy (which you can listen to here) for their 2012 album In Orchestra I really love both versions of the song because they're just both so good! But if I had to choose between the one I prefer, it would definitely be the original. I love Hooverphonic's version but the original has that amazing magic to it. I don't know if I should use nostalgic to describe it. But my grandmother really loved it. This song, Teardrops (Womack & Womack)& Love Fool (The Cardigans) are my Grandmas life soundtrack I swear. It might be because Hooverphonic's cover is only Orchestral and holds it back, makes it feel... [I]Unfinished [/I in a way. It's still a good cover and I really do love it though. If I had to say if it did anything better than the original. It would be capturing that feeling of sadness.

In 2009, Pixie's "Use Somebody" (Kings of Leon cover) was critically claimed, so it was an obvious choice for this theme. I was never a fan of the original version (it's too much for me), but Pixie made it simple. She was only 18 when she covered this song, so it was surprising how much emotion she could put into her cover version. I think her version is a completely different interpretation of the song, but its meaning is still the same.
COLLABORATIVE
"Coming Home" is my favorite song from her, not because it features my favorite male artist Jason Derulo, but it shows another side of Pixie. This is her only reggae-ish song. The thing I like the most is the chemistry between her and Jason. They perfectly complement each other. The guitar dominates the whole track and it sounds heavenly in its outro. I hope Jason and Pixie work with each other again in the future.

When you have a group with three to four vocalists on a track simultaneously it can be difficult to mingle yet another voice into an already harmonized blend. For those reasons alone it's abundantly clear that the best companion for collaboration is the music and styling of the whimsical Lindsey Stirling.
Weaving herself into the instrumental she supports Kevin's Cello with her own strings, subtlety in the verse then soothingly in the pre-hook. Her gentle harmony complements the throbbing bass before abruptly embracing and rising above the beat now backed by Kevins vocal percussion.
This alternation of production leadership coupled with Scott's rapid lyrical tune creates a very interesting and dynamic tempo for the song.In verse two Lindsay tailors herself to play the additional role of providing tension and suspense melodically, generating buildup for the breakdown.
By the end of the middle eight Lindsay and Pentatonix have seamlessly entwined their sound, her serving as the support the and syncopation and them providing the melody and structure to make a beautiful and bangin' bop.

I forgot to mention this in the write up i ment to but Scott (and Kristi and Mitch) didn't know french at all but worked with some french vocal teachers to get the words and pronunciation right because Scott loves the song and Stromae so much

We did a European tour, and one of our friends in France played us this song by a Belgian artist. We loved it so much but never thought to cover it because it was French.
