One of Mariah's weakest albums. It's far too middle of the road and vanilla for my personal liking. You can tell that Tommy had more to do with the sound of this album than with any other Mariah album. Mariah herself has even stated that she isn't too fond of a lot of the songs on this album - most notably Hero, which is one of her signature songs. Still, songs like Anytime You Need a Friend remind us all why your faves are vocally inadequate.

Alternative Dance/Trip hop

I went back and listened to this album and I loved what I heard. It's dance-pop for sure, but it's dance-pop at its most unconventional and exciting. Songs like Big Time Sensuality, Violently Happy, and There's More to Life Than This all manage to sound completely out there without alienating a listener like me. A great album that most definitely deserves its place.
kind if unrelated, but can anyone that's into her music explain to me why Charmbracelet is kind of universally hated?
It's a long story... but the opinion that I find of a lot of lambs is that she whispers far too much on it and it's just... very underwhelming coming after Glitter. However many years later, I've gotten around to appreciate a few songs from it because like every Mariah album, it does have it's gems.
Fav songs are Human Behavior, Crying, One Day, Venus As A Boy, and It's Oh So Quiet. I just realized it will be 20 years next year since her solo debut (well as an adult)

oh, that's pretty surprising
I always thought Mariah Carey was somewhat of a singles artist without solid albums like a lot of "vocal powerhouses", but Butterfly was actually pretty nice
Wristband has some killer tracks, but the bad tracks are among Mariah's worst. Also WTF was she thinking releasing Through The Rain?
I think it was to show the public (and the media) that she was unrattled... I mean, after the dragging that she got during the Glitter era, I can see why it was released as the lead single. Besides, the content of the song is very Mariah.
Hey ECNEICSNOC, you need to listen to Mellon Collie ASAP, its one of the defining albums of the decade, and its the summation of alternative rock before the Spice Girls and teen pop took over for good in 1997

R&B/Hip Hop Soul

On Mary J. Blige's sophomore album, she softens the hip hop beats a tad and turns up the soul. Her reflections on love (in particular the loss of love and the unhappiness it can bring) give the listener a deep understanding of just how tortured she was during this period of her life.
