It's nice when artist's album debut at #1 but it's not most important thing at all. The main label's goal is total performance - I mean revenue. Releasing album before Christmas is great idea to make max sales - you know: Xmas CD gifts, digital sales boost (gift cards effect), ect.
Rihanna is able sell 150k in the first week or less so a lot of artist could block her. She can wait but then she lost christmas boost. Don't drag
