Dance music was rampant in the early 80s, especially among black artists who did it first anyway. MJ, Prince, Chaka Kahn, all of them were doing "dance music," but it was funk and R&B infused. Whitney's first album isn't even dance for the most part. It's straight up R&B which set the blueprint for almost every female R&B album to follow. Her second album is more dance but is also infused with funk and R&B. It sounds nothing like the stuff Madonna was puting out.
She's not influenced by Madonna and neither is Mariah.
