The pharmaceutical industry is very icky. Obviously a high potential price point is what motivates these companies to dump billions into research and testing (it is extremely laborious and expensive to get a drug cleared through the proper channels for distribution), but there has to be some tighter regulation for stuff like this.

It's my understanding that patents are good for 20 years after filing, not drug creation. A delay in submission could explain the discrepancy. Don't know if that's what happened here, though.
