The difference between the Record and Song of the Year categories: Record goes to the overall production, while Song goes to the people behind its composition. Which is why this category is probably up for grabs between “I Gotta Feeling” and “Poker Face,” two songs that rode their own cultural tidal waves thanks to, respectively, their reappropriating of “Hava Naglia” and their willingness to repeat single syllables on endless loop.

Kings Of Leon’s slow-burn success—anyone remember when they were sniffed at by critics because of their “southern Strokes” status?—will surely be appreciated by any Academy voter who’s had a project they loved dropped prematurely by the cold, hard execs of the biz. Plus, “Use Somebody” is a sterling example of a straightforward rock song, something that many a voter is no doubt nostalgic for in this time when rock seems forever divided between post-grunge bombast and indie-rock navelgazing.

Perhaps the most perplexing category. Beyoncé’s album was flawed both in its sequencing (front-loaded with ballads, leaving “Single Ladies” hidden under a pile of treacle and and “Ave Maria” cover) and release strategy (one of its best songs, the sultry “Ego,” was only available on the deluxe edition); GaGa’s album is too long by half and The Fame Monster came out too late to be eligible; the Black Eyed Peas surely deserve some kind of award for figuring out multiple revenue streams in a recession, but Album Of The Year ain’t it. (Inexplicably missing in action: Green Day’s ambitiously flawed 21st Century Breakdown and Maxwell’s astonishing comeback BLACKsummer’snight.) Taylor Swift’s Fearless, however, was a huge commercial success (it’s sold 5.4 million copies to date in a woeful time for album sales) fronted by the sort of artist that even older voters can love (she plays a guitar, which catches the occasional teardrop). It’s a lock.

The Best New Artist category is no longer the red-headed stepchild of the Grammys, but this year’s nominees all have in common the fact that they’ve actually been in music for a while: You’ve got one longtime songwriter (Hilson, who kicked around the business as a songwriter before releasing her many-times-delayed debut album in March); a clutch of bands that could be seen as “totally old news” by the music bloggerati (new wavers MGMT, alt-rock throwbacks Silversun Pickups, stridently synth-poppers Ting Tings); and a country band that self-released its first album all the way back in 2004 (the Zac Brown Band). The smart money would be on Brown here, and not just because his band wins in the “oldest recording before the people at NARAS sat up and took notice” derby.
