She's still had some success in recent years (loyal US fanbase) but her career has faltered a lot since her 3rd album. She could've easily had a couple more big eras post-Breakaway had politics not got in the way.

She definitely could have, but I don't think she wanted that. She changed management shortly after My December came out, and she said it was because her old manager (that she switched to right before the Breakaway era started) was trying to make her the biggest star in the world, and while it paid off professionally during the Breakaway era, it drove her into a deep depression and she kinda hit rock bottom. She just didn't want to be the biggest star in the world, and changed to a manager that understood her better.
I think she's happy with where she's at now......her 3rd era underperformed due to the label sabotaging it and pretty much pulling the plug on it right away (even then, the album still went Platinum and had a Top 10 hit), but her eras since then have all seen some sort of success. The Stronger era especially was her first era where she truly seemed happier than ever. And on top of that, she had great success with it. She's also gotten to do some amazing things in the past few years like the Superbowl national anthem and the Presidential Inauguration, which are arguably two of her biggest appearances in her career.
