I totally agree with your point about the length of Lykke Li's album. I would have had a much harder time with the album if it had gone on longer than a half hour...

The Mariah picks
Gotta check out the Hozier album, I'm interested to see what he's capable of beyond TMTC.
And I will have a lot to say about I Never Learn. Agreed that the length keeps it running strong, a Purple Rain tea.

Dammit, Hozier, stop looking at me like that. I didn't listen to your album, I know, but I will in 2015! I swear!

I'm really happy to see SOHN in your list. His album is pretty good, although I did get sick of it throughout the middle of the year and only just recently coming back around to it.
Agreed on the highlights of Lykke Li's album. "Gunshot" is so good.

Nabuma Rubberband • Little Dragon
RELEASED: May 13, 2014
FORMAT: LP
GENRE: Synthpop, R&B
I discovered the group after their Kelis cover of "Millionaire". I'm a sucker for soft, sultry, and smokey voices R&B voices, Yukimi Nagano's voice is just that. The album is full of slow jams with some danceable, electronic and bass-driven productions.
Standouts: Paris, Klapp Klapp, Pretty Girls |

Goddess • Banks
RELEASED: September 8, 2014
FORMAT: LP
GENRE: Alternative, R&B, Pop
It was actually underwhelming at first, especially the fact that we heard damn near half the album already, so there was almost nothing to look forward to. Actually... she should be thankful that she included her EP otherwise this would be ranked lower, but the new tracks eventually caught on and some became my favorites. I'm still here for the dark R&B and distorted productions but I'm expecting something fresh for her follow-up. "Beggin' For Thread" should be the direction she should go in.
Standouts: Brain, Beggin For Thread, F*ck Em Only We Know |

No Mythologies to Follow • MØ
RELEASED: March 11, 2014
FORMAT: LP
GENRE: Electropop, Indietronica
I feel like taking responsibility for MØ's existence on ATRL (just because I can), she was my little secret until everyone caught on and I was no longer special. I mean who else had her on their countdown last year telling the girls that she was the next best thing? I mean she still isn't, especially with that dreadful SNL performance but whatever. 'No Mythologies to Follow' was immediate but I didn't get sick of it quickly. Not saying it's the most innovative, but I haven't heard any pop record like it at the time of its release and I appreciated that.
Standouts: Don’t Wanna Dance, XXX 88, Glass |

The Pinkprint • Nicki Minaj
RELEASED: December 15, 2014
FORMAT: LP
GENRE: Hip-Hop, Pop
So yeah, I Beyoncé'd this and added it last minute on my chart the moment it was released. I'll probably regret this in the future. Underwhelming singles aside, it's surprisingly a great album. In fact, this is actually Nicki's first "real" album in my opinion: sonically it's on point, she's vulnerable, personal, and rapping & singing better than ever. One negative is that it's missing a bit of character (Roman) but maybe that's what makes this more tolerable? I'm also glad there's a minimum of dance-pop songs this time around.
Standouts: The Crying Game, Shanghai, Four Door Aventador |
28. Nabuma Rubberband • Little Dragon
27. Goddess • Banks
26. No Mythologies to Follow • MØ
25. The Pinkprint • Nicki Minaj

I thought mo was kinda Lana esque but okay. I need to listen to little dragon. I tried listening to nickis but after 10 seconds I was like NOPE. But I'm sure I'll like at least a couple from it.

YES at all these entries, especially Nicki and Banks!! Totally agree about the standout tracks for each, "Four Door" is my JAM and I can't get over the randomness of a Nicki/the talented Jessie collab.

woo no, maybe vocal wise they might have a similar sound but NMTF is more upbeat. Ultraviolence was so boring to me and this is coming from someone that might have
Jhené Aiko
on their list .
