For my second Dance Floor Spotlight, I am showcasing Conor Maynard. Although that may sound like an odd choice at first, he's actually really fitting.
Houston, I think we got a problem
I remember watching random videos on YouTube, and Conor Maynard was VEVO's LIFT artist, so I figured why not, although I expected to hate it. I think it was that reason why I didn't like this song, or Conor at first. Obviously that's changed, as now I find this song okay, although nowhere near his best.
Later on, I heard Vegas Girl, and like before, I expected to hate it, and that mind set made me not want to like it. Oddly enough, I still found myself singing it to myself months after I first heard it, so I eventually gave in and listened to the song again...I low-key loved it!
This is for the girl that can get down low
I can do it better than, better than you
Around this time, I was stanning pretty hard for Rita Ora, having heard R.I.P and absolutely losing my ****ing mind. When I found out she had a song with Conor, I just HAD to check it out. Needless to say, I wasn't disappointed! It inspired me to listen to more of Conor's music, and now I can say his album "Contrast" is among my favorite albums!
Among my favorite songs of Conor's are his dance songs like "Animal (solo version)", "Take Off" , and "Lift Off" (and the aforementioned "Better Than You (feat. Rita Ora)"), although I even love his slower songs like "Pictures" and "Glass Girl".
It's rare that I like a male artist so much, and it's also rare that I like slow album tracks, so when both happen simultaneously, I know I've found someone special. Even when I made this Dance Floor Spotlight, I had "Mary Go Round" stuck in my head.
Conor is one of my favorite male artists, and a great choice for the second Dance Floor Spotlight
Fun fact: Both artists in my first two dance floor spotlights follow me on Twitter, but that was just coincidence.
Year of release: 2014, Genre(s): Pop/Rap, Language(s) - Korean, Album - Reality (2014)
When I said Lip Service were doing fine as a duo, this is the song I was referring to. This song, in terms of K-Pop, was pretty different in my opinion. The chorus is catchy (and easily singable...at least the yums, anyway), and the raps are energetic, upbeat, and slightly quirky. It gave them a distinct style that set them apart from usual girl group debuts; since they were only a duo, it was also easier to see the personalities of the girls. This honestly felt like a really strong debut for them, and I had hopes for them...but it seems everything went downhill after this song failed to leave much impact.
Year of release: 2013, Genre(s): Trap, Language(s) - English, Album - Shotgun (2013)
I remember exactly how I found out about this! There was a thread created sometime early this year about trap music, and this was one of the songs posted in the thread. Out of curiosity, I decided to give the song a listen and I was like "Wow! This Rochelle girl can SING." I was a bit put off by the breakdown, which is what dragged the song down a bit. This was one of my first encounters with trap, though, but it certainly wasn't the last!
"You've been breakin' me down, and now it's enough, cause you do it again and again..."
