Top 100 Songs of 2014
100-91
90-81
80-71
70-61
60-51
50-41
40-31:
40 Nicki Minaj - Favorite (featuring Jeremih)
In my opinion, this is most underrated album track on The Pinkprint. While Jeremih did a great job with the rather simple chorus ("I just wanna be your favorite"), Nicki is the person here who really brings it all. Her voice is clear, direct, and emotionally charged, helping her lyrics have an impact on the listener and create a story. The first verse is a standout on TPP, but the second verse might be the absolute best verse on the entire album for it's instant replay value. Favorite reminds me a lot of Pink Friday and would've fit perfectly on that tracklist inbetween Right Thru Me, Fly & Save Me. It captures the softer, less seen side of Nicki that I love to hear in her songs the most. It brings out the best in her skills.
39 Calvin Harris - Together (featuring Gwen Stefani)
Gwen Stefani's solo material has been a bit disappointing this year. While I liked Baby Don't Lie at first, the charm wore off, and I no longer like it. The same is happening with Spark the Fire, even though Spark the Fire is better and more individually Gwen than Baby Don't Lie, one of the most faceless pop songs of the year. All of that being said, I was still beyond excited when I found out Gwen would be on a Calvin Harris album. It's not everyday you see a collaboration like this happen, so I was really excited for the results. In typical Calvin fashion, he brought out the best in his collaborator, tuned the song's production and style to that artist's taste, and wrapped it all in a fresh, modern-sounding ribbon of production. Together screams huge comeback single potential for Gwen and I hope it's released ASAP. It's catchy, easy to listen, and explosive dance pop. It's nothing new in terms of song structure, but that doesn't make it any less interesting to me.
38 Ryn Weaver - Stay Low
I'm looking out for Ryn Weaver to be one of the breakthrough pop girls of 2015. Her EP Promises is, fittingly, one of the most promising bodies of new music from a new artist I heard the entire year. She is already working with big name like Maroon 5, Benny Blanco, and Gwen Stefani, and her expertise shows in her own music as well. One of the more unknown yet phenomenal cuts on the EP is Stay Low, a synthy and dreamy pop song. The first 10 seconds will capture your attention immediately, further drawing you in to the beat drop during the chorus and the continued momentum throughout the second verse and onwards. While the production and technicalities here are impressive, Ryn's lyrics and vocals are equally commendable. After hearing this, I can't wait for her debut in 2015!
37 Azealia Banks - Soda
I'm a huge fan of when Azealia incorporates aspects of house music into her own music. Soda is one of the most house-esque and "dancey" songs on all of Broke With Expensive Taste. She sings on the entire track, and the results are phenomenal. First of all, Azealia has an amazing singing voice packed with emotion and personality. Then, she can manipulate her singing to sound like she's rapping too, delivering her lyrics here at the rapid pace and intensity you would expect from other BWET cuts without any singing. I think Soda is one of the first songs I would show to people who were asking me about Azealia Banks, as it's one of her most accessible and easy to digest songs to date. It's smooth on the ears, pleasant on the ears, & easy to dance to. It could've fit on the 1991 EP, which is everything I wanted from at least one more track on BWET.
36 Coldplay - Magic
Coldplay's music is hit or miss for me. But when they hit me, they hit me with full force and make me obsessed. Magic is one of the most instant Coldplay songs I've ever listened to on first date, and the effect hasn't worn off 9 months later. I prefer it over their other recent first singles, Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall and Viva la Vida, but I have a feeling big Coldplay fans would argue with me saying Viva la Vida > Magic. Anyway, Magic's biggest strength is how seamlessly the production and vocals mix together. The production never overrides Chris' vocals, creating a steady beat and mood for the song. While my biggest complaint about typical Coldplay songs are that some of them tend to be boring, Magic is not one of them. It's an interesting listen throughout where I relate to every word. This will be one of my favorite Coldplay songs for the remainder of their career, honestly.
35 Iggy Azalea - Fancy (featuring Charli XCX)
No doubt one of the biggest songs of 2014, and for good reason. I think I was quoting this song as soon as I first heard out. This just goes to show it's catchy as all hell, thanks to BOTH Iggy and Charli (because despite detractors attempts to say "it's only a hit because of Charli!1", Iggy plays a huge part in the song's appeal as well). Iggy's verses are fun and memorable, perfect for any radio and party playlist looking to make any party a bit more exciting. Charli is the icing on top that gives the song its massive crossover appeal. The beat, of course, is also fresh and interesting, fitting perfect within the DJ Mustard beat craze of 2014. Honestly, I thought this song was produced by DJ Mustard until I learned otherwise. Based on my experience, I have little doubt this song will be well remembered for years to come, a go-to song for some of our young-adult lives. Nostalgia is not for geeks, it is for the fancy.
34 Maroon 5 - Maps
I remember when I first listened to this six months ago that it reminded me of Payphone for some reason. I think the similarities I drew were due to both having a made-for-radio-play pop chorus with a carefully crafted hook. However, I have decided that I significantly prefer Maps over Payphone. Maps starts off with a strangely dark and rocky vibe with Adam's deeper vocals and prominent guitar in the background. However, by the chorus, Ryan Tedder's contribution comes in, and the song turns into a shamelessly blissful pop song. The rock vibe is pretty consistent throughout the rest of the song, though, reminding me of their Hands All Over album (my favorite album of theirs, so this is a good thing). The bridge is clearly inpsired by Counting Stars' bridge, but since Ryan Tedder helped make Maps too, I'll let it pass since the bridge on Maps is well done nonetheless. Overall, while V is far from my favorite M5 album, Maps is one of my favorite M5 songs of the past 4 years.
33 Shakira - Can't Remember to Forget You (featuring Rihanna)
I have a couple reasons for putting this song so high on my list, since a lot of people will probably scratch their heads at this one. Reason 1) RIHANNA. I've been dying for new Rihanna the entire year, and the only new music she released at all was her contribution to this song. However, she absolutely annihilates her verse and lets her island flair show in her accent to amazing results. Her voice sounds powerful, resonant, and addicting, exemplifying why she's irreplaceable in current pop music. Reason 2) Shakira. She also sounds great and adds a certain flair to the song with her accent, specifically on the chorus and in the bridge. Reason 3) replay value. Despite general consensus, the song had a lot of longevity with me, and I played it repeatedly throughout the entire year. I take replay value hugely into account when making this list, so therefore it fits all the criteria worthy of it's #33 placement.
32 Chris Brown - Came to Do (featuring Akon)
A bit of a shameless repeat of Loyal, but in my opinion, it's even better. It's just a guilty pleasure earworm of a track with its crazy production value and insanely catchy lyrics. Not one part of the song isn't catchy or addicting in some manner. My personal favorite part is the intro and the part that starts at 1:38. Overall, I don't have a lot to say on this song besides that it's HOT and I couldn't get enough of it. Akon was a bit of an odd choice for a feature artist, but he pulls it off and contributes an enjoyable third verse. I found Came to Do to be a more instantly likable song than Loyal. Listen to this one while you work out!
31 Azealia Banks - Wallace
One of the most artistic and skillfull songs on Azealia's new album. No one else could've pulled this off except for her, as the song is so uniquely her that it's literally linked to her identity as a performer and artist. The song is all over the place in all the right ways. She transitions from singing to rapping over a constantly changing beat with the seamlessness of an absolute pro of a rapper. Her flow here is easily one of the absolute finest of the year. She hits some of the coolest notes after the 2:00 as well, showing off more of her singing right after she shows off her insane rapping skills. Wallace is impressive and should prove to anyone who doubts Azealia why she deserves a chance to make it big.

Surprised to see Soda and Wallace getting a lot of love on all these lists since they are among my least fave on the album. I still like them, but it's nice to know that her more sing-y songs get love too.

I love how you have your current results in the OP.
I love Magic
I agree with what you said about Came To Do. It's basically Loyal part 2, but it's a strong track and why fix what isn't broken.
I don't know why so many people hate on Can't Remember To Forget You, it's more of a lowkey song, but it's fun and really catchy.
Nice set of songs, they're all strong.
