"Happy" is definitely beautiful, but I feel like a lot of the power this song has comes from previous knowledge of Marina's struggles. Stuff she's admitted in previous songs and interviews which lead to her depression.
I've found what I've been looking for in myself.
Found a life worth living for someone else.
These words are gentle but at the same time, they pack a real punch. They're a victory salute.
So now you know, you know it all.
That I've been desperately alone.
I also feel these lyrics are significant (although it feels like every lyric in this song are significant). On TFJ, Marina didn't really talk about love. On EH, Marina talked about love a lot, but they were delivered through various archetypes to make it easier for Marina to sing them.
Yet here we have Marina as herself, stripped down, telling the world that she's been lonely. No Electra Heart, no poppy production to mask the lyrics. It's one of the biggest moments in the entire song, and dare I say it, one of the boldest moments in her discography.
I also love the transition between "Happy" and "Froot". They are so good back-to-back.
So sonically different, but thematically similar. They actually flow nicely.
Livin la dolce vita, life couldn't get much sweeter...
It sounds weird because I don't personally know her, but as someone who's followed Marina for years now, I'm so proud of and relieved for Marina that she overcame everything and found happiness. She deserves everything.
