That's because it was commercialised. Easter never used to be about chocolate either

Anyway, it's silly for a Christian to tell an Atheist that they are contradictory, considering an atheist admittedly doesn't believe and so can really partake in whatever tradition they want without the remorse of worshipping false gods.

That's my point. It has turned into a commercial holiday, and not a religious one.
And besides, atheists could have family members who might not share their views. So they're just not supposed to take part in a celebration with their family?
I do think it would be odd of an entire atheist family to celebrate Christmas though.

At the end of the day, everyone else is appropriating something the Christians appropriated at some point. So the debt is repaid, stop whining.

But you could land on earth on Decemeber 24th, look around and there would be no indication that this holiday is to celebrate Jesus. You'd see holly, garlands, Santa, reindeers, elves, presents, jingle bells, wreaths, but very few baby jesus' and mangers.
I think an atheist family could celebrate Christmas no problem. It's my favourite season, and while I'm not atheist, I'm not religious by any means. I love it because it's "the happiest season of all", it's warm, loving, about family and tradition. I could care less about presents. I like the feeling it gives me.

ok, then you need to look to the outside world rather than North America and Europe. People EVERYWHERE, from Africa to Asia to South America celebrate Christmas. And I'm very sure the majority of them are atheists/not Christians. It's not even about Jesus anymore, people just love the happy, family-oriented spirit and the presents of course.

That's not the point of the thread... Like someone else said it was adopted AS a Catholic holiday... it doesn't matter how society sees it now lol its a religious holiday.

Okay but just like it went from Paganism to Christianity, it's now gone from Christianity to Commercialism.
In fact it's almost come back full circle in that it's considered more of a winter holiday than a holiday to celebrate Jesus' birth.

Because
I love getting wasted and getting gifts
and I also happen to love parties with my friends.
New Year and Xmas has lost it's religious side like decades ago. It's more a Hallmark holiday than anything really.

Agreed. I'm an atheist myself; I just said it would seem a little odd to me, but there's nothing wrong with it.

I don't even like getting gifts. I'd rather not get any so that I don't have to buy any for anyone.

Because it is a cultural one, I guess. Just like how people in Muslim-dominant country celebrate Eid even if they are not Moslem. Some of us even celebrate it by drinking (while it is actually prohibited by religion but then again it is becoming a cultural celebration).

Christmas is originally pagan. Jesus was not actually born December 25. No one knows exact date but the bible says it was in the summer.
