Where are people getting this false idea from?
In most rankings, the U.S. is consistently in the Top 10 for the best education in the world. Undeniably it needs improvements, but the U.S. isn't the world superpower and for just no reason. There are also hundreds of thousands of students from foreign countries coming to get educated in American schools.

Highschoolers don't usually have to worry about rent, utilities and car payments, taxes, raising a family, not having their parents with them to help out and much more responsibilities. Life is stressful and living as a functional member of society is way more stressful than reading a damn book or doing math problems.
I took multiple AP classes my Senior year of High School with a part time job and being an adult is 10x more stressful and "hazardous" to my health. The discipline I learned in High School was beneficial to my work ethic after college and I was glad for that opportunity to learn for free. It sucks that current students don't feel that same gratitude.

Don't get me wrong. The U.S. Education system needs reformed. The main problem lies in that it varies so much state to state. Some states have systems that are the best in the world, while others are complete ****.
However, homework has nothing to do with it. I doubt that countries that have more successful systems require much less homework.

And the title of this thread is misleading. The author is implying that the academic pressures to get into college are the cause of harm to students' health, not homework exclusively. Students are doing just as much homework today as they were 30 years ago, the only difference is that more students are attending college and they are becoming increasingly competitive to get into.
Maybe if some of you spent less time on ATRL instead of waiting until the last minute to do your homework, you wouldn't be as stressed out. Ya'll want everything free, but the one of the most important things you get free, your education, you don't appreciate it. It's a shame some of you have such a bad attitude towards education when there are kids out in 3rd world countries going to school in tents and cinderblocks who are outperforming you in college admissions because they understand the value of what they can achieve.
It's about balance, folks.

I dont want "education", I want knowledge
Life is a competition, why would I want to know what everybody else knows too?
Real world doesn't care about what you can say, it only cares about what you can do

The "education" you seem to scorn is what separates us from Neanderthals.
Having an "education" makes you capable of learning and creating new processes and looking at situations critically beyond burger has been in pan for 1 minute.... is time to flip.
Your view of education is incredibly simplistic. There are a TON of possible careers out there. There is not enough time in the day to teach you the skills for ALL of those careers. Instead school provides you with a general base of knowledge so that you can then choose to pursue whichever trade your desire.

The problem is, High School doesn't serve you knowledge, it just dumps information into you

And here come the people saying our generation is lazy, we're too weak, etc...and lumping us all together as if we're all the same. Great.

You mean just like people in this thread are lumping all homework together as pointless and harmful?

I never said homework was pointless (although in some cases, it is).
Its annoying how you all constantly generalize everyone, as if we have the same experiences with school and what not.
The issue is not the homework itself; the issue is the excessive amount students receive. I could care less if get homework; free grades. However, it becomes a problem when its literally excessive. That's where I draw the line.

Okay, let's get rid of homework. Then when you get to college, are slapped with the heavy load of homework PER class, and aren't prepared to deal with it, you'll cry that the schools didn't prepare you for what was coming. Boo-hoo.
I am a part-time college professor AND junior high teacher. I'm just sayin...

People generalize.... on both sides.
This is not new, and is not news.
...also define "excessive". I think it is reasonable to require 1-2 hours of homework a night at most. (less if some given over weekend)
The only people in my school who have more than that are AP students, and it is their choice to take advanced courses.

quality education is a right.
if you don't want it because it's not catered specifically for you, then drop out and good luck with the rest of life.
Most people have to work to get through life, not because they want to.
