Lorde is the first global superstar from New Zealand the frenzy OVER THERE is definitely new (new not only for Lorde but for the country). Basically New Zealanders are waking up to the fact that the illusion they had about their country being calm and collected and where celebrities can move about freely without anyone bothering them is no longer real and that they are not as special as they thought they were (immune from hysterics).

I'm from NZ so I can confirm that this post is true.
To me, it seemed like Lorde was saying that she knew she'd be treated like a commodity, but she didn't know how hard it would be, or what she'd feel like when it happened.
But she never expected her home country to react the same way. Lorde was under the illusion, like most NZers', that NZ doesn't like celebrity culture.
There is a media FRENZY in NZ, for the last two weeks every time I turn on the news or look at the newspaper Lorde has been mentioned. She's the first global superstar from NZ - prior to Lorde NZers neevr thought they had a chance of stardom.
In less than a year, Lorde has shattered that perception. Of course everyone in NZ is going to go crazy over her - she's made almost the entire country proud. Most of us are rooting for her, unfortunately there are a lot of people here that see $$$ when they look at her.
