1. Eminem - Berzerk


Oh. My. God. This song is awful. I couldn't believe that it was actually a song and it was actually being played on the radio (sure it didn't last long but still, I heard it multiple times, that's enough it). I guess the theme is to make a more old school sounding song, but uh. This is such a mess. The samples are really poorly placed and instead of sounding like a cool mashup it sounds like a cheap song produced by someone with the budget of say, ICP. Eminem's rapping is the icing on the cake. It's just yelling. Isn't he supposedly the greatest rapper alive or something? Why is this his lead single to his new classic? His line in his most famous diss song "Nail In the Coffin" that says "I don't wanna be like this, I don't really wanna hurt no feelings, But I'm only being real when I say Nobody wants to hear that grandfather rap" describe this song more than they do to Benzino's diss song. Seriously, he sounds so out of touch on this song. And I'm a Madonna stan, so I KNOW about that ****. Long gone are the days when he was the anti-Pop star who made clever digs at the stars of the boy/girl band era of pop music, now he's just making a party (?) song that sometimes references pop culture (I heard a line about a Kardashian somewhere I think but I couldn't understand much because he's really incomprehensible here). I just cannot believe this song is a thing. It exists, and that makes me very sad and the fact that it peaked high just makes me sadder. Easily the worst song of 2013 for me, white trash at its finest.

Overall 8/10 for your worst of list. I haven't heard London Grammar, and I still like WCS but otherwise so, so accurate!

OK, so I have actually no qualms with "Harlem Shake." It was a completely deserved #1 and a cultural phenomenon. What made it special was that it was a meme that developed, um, pretty much naturally. "The Fox," however, is anything but. It is an attempt at some sort of super-meme status with so much money thrown at it, that it loses all magic it could have had. Watching the video is an odd experience, you can tell it's no "Harlem Shake," or hell, even a "Friday," which makes it really uncomfortable to watch/listen to. these memes/cultural phenomena became important because they just clicked with the GP and the internet, not because they were manufactured to do so. I couldn't even get a chuckle out of it because its attempt to go "viral" (which basically succeeded, unfortunately) were ingenuine. It looks and sounds like a stiffy middle aged businessman's attempt to make money off of meme songs.

And I couldn't disagree more about Berzerk. I really didn't mind the 'shouting', especially since I get the feeling that he was trying to mimic/ pay homage to the Beastie Boys (their vocal delivery in particular). If you listen to some of their earlier work, particularly Licensed to Ill, it's just as shouty as Berzerk. The unorganized, disjointed sampling is also reminiscent of the Beastie Boys, in some respects (seriously, listen to 'Time to Get Ill').

Also, 'The Fox' wasn't an intentional attempt to create a meme. It was created specifically for Ylvis's Norwegian fans. It just happened to catch on with American audiences because it's so damn ridiculous.

Cruise and Holy Grail suck, though. And We Can't Stop is goddamn TERRIBLE.

I was okay with most of your list (and I can't stand "We Can't Stop" and the "Cruise" remix, either), and I'm even okay with your opinion of "The Fox", because it's not for everyone...and I'm just going to ignore your opinion on "Radioactive", because it's one of the best songs to impact this year.

Your take on "Demons", though, is just FACTUALLY wrong. It's not a song about a breakup. At all. One glance at the lyrics can tell you that. It's up to interpretation, but I think it's more about how we all have personal demons that haunt us, whether that be a trauma event, a mental disorder, or something that we're trying to keep hidden from the ones we love. I even recall the lead singer saying that the song was about his battle with depression. This song went COMPLETELY over your head, madonners.

But that's okay. I still enjoy your company.
