Well you have the malicious people to call the era a "flop" and those with sense to note it as a disappointing follow-up. The latter still applies, despite the streaming success in 2011. The rest of that era fell apart quickly, but "Born This Way" obviously came out swinging in its first few weeks before deteriorating -- which I'm sure the bulk of those streams account for.

That just proved the hysteria for her return then. I want to say the same will happen with "Applause", but it's so difficult to weigh now with how the last era performed. So we can only wait and watch, it's exciting.

Surprisingly, BTW itself only accounts for about 25 million streams (though it's in the top ten of its year as well, I should note).

I'm not sure how Nielsen compiles the streaming list, but the 25 million streams was for the video, while it did a little under 37 million as a song (according to the top 10 lists for those areas) a total of 72 million. But, I don't think it's a matter of taking the numbers from either list and figuring out what the overall artists list shows, because if you put all of LMFAO's streaming songs and videos just from the top ten they have over 223 million streams in 2011. Or Nicki with 156 million just from "Super Bass" being the top streamed video and song of 2011.

So there must be a method unbeknownst to us. Either way, it's still very obvious "Born This Way" (and the streaming of her past hits) are the bulk of whatever way they calculated the 135 million for 2011. The rest of the singles, bar maybe "The Edge of Glory", didn't have the pull or the longevity to capture any notable percentage of that total.

True, but I think that pre-BTW material might have had a hand in it. Regardless she should do very well in streaming with at least "Applause", if it's good, and perhaps with other singles if they become radio and sales hits (unlike, for example, "Judas" and the last two BTW singles). Mismanagement of her singles is something to take into account and something that is hopefully not repeated. I just wonder how quickly "Applause" will sustain what I predict will be good initial streaming support.
