Today, censorship is an issue that doesn’t affect just one group of people; this restraint affects the millions upon millions of people who watch TV, read newspapers or other publications, as well as listening to music or some sort of broadcast. Our media and entertainment options, and how we obtain them have been greatly evolving over the past couple of decades. Our culture has come a long way from 8-track tapes, just 5 TV stations, and the Friendly neighborhood “Tid-bits.” In this generation we have lightly enforced websites with explicit content that can be easily accessed, reality TV shows on every-other channel, I Pods, pirate downloading software, which is difficult for any parent to shield their children from what they’re not yet ready to see. At the same time, the parents should take this challenge instead of remaining helpless, by simply monitoring and mandating their kids’ entertainment. It’s also ironic and contradicting to see that we are able to have the rights to free speech in the United States, yet we have government agencies like the FCC dictating what can and cannot be said or shown. A majority of America’s entertainment values have gone beyond Lassie and even Cheers. It’s now apparent that a sizable part of the American mainstream culture is interested in sex, adultery, violence, openness, drugs, and indulgent twisted humor. This can be seen as such because those topics make up well known entertainment selections such as Desperate Housewives, Robot Chicken, and CSI. It’s also unique to see that so called “vulgar” entertainment are what really sell in our society over the so-called “Good-Christian” entertainment. Uncensored materials are what people want to see, and they will pay money to obtain them. But in the end, the concept of Censorship is more detrimental than as it helps.
