Britney and Gaga are the most iconic popstars of their respective eras and YES, they're impact is the same.
They both changed the industry.
Forced other girls to switch it up.
Influenced an entire generation.
Been called the heir to Madonna.
Phenomenal sales.
Iconic performances.
Queens of their decades.

She has Christina and other popstars that failed like Jessica, Mandy, Willa etc.. She was also battling it out with the 90s biggest names, Madonna, Mariah, Whitney, J.Lo, Beyonce.. She came out on top, she sold the most albums by any other female artist last decade. Her singles had cultural impact.. Slave, Baby, Oops, Toxic hell even her 2007 album became one of the most influential albums of the past 5 years. She conquered the world during 1998-2004 and still managed to be critically acclaimed with Blackout. She is still breaking records well of course, they will be broken but the fact that she is still breaking them is an assurance that she will not go anywhere anytime soon.
Lady Gaga never achieved that. The Fame will be four years old already. Although she was hugely successful, she has yet to reach Britney's success during her first 4 years.

Gaga is on her 3rd year, and has achieved as much as Britney had during that same amount of time so let's not throw Britney's whole career worth of receipts into the mix.

When Britney was in her peak she was everywhere. I remember everybody was wearing skechers because of her, drinking pepsi became something Britney-related Lol and every girl wanted to be like her. She was HUGE and I mean HUGE.

Success wise, Gaga hasn't come close to Britney. Britney had two 3 HUGE tours before Gaga came around. She also created two of the highest paying celebrity endorsements of all time, Pepsi and her Fragrance... I mean, Britney was named the most powerful celebrity on the Earth once...
as of now, we have to see if Gaga continues to rise or if she peaks with this album. It's far too early to judge, but I think Gaga can certainly get there.

She's a trendsetter even when she's underperforming.
Nicki Minaj is basically the Black version of her. Katy has dressed a little eccentrically within the past year. Every popstar is chanting "be urself!@!5" when they previously didn't.

But not as big as Brit! But she doesn't come second to Britney!
Also I see the fame/monster as her peak because it was also about the music and her image. It's was a one time magical moment in music that cannot be repeated.
I feel like she lost that with born this way, Hense why it sold less. This album was about a huge gimmick being born this way.
I'm sure next album shes see her mistake. She's going to come back with more dance music just like just dance / pokerface.

Suicide, to those who think Gaga's career is done, just cause she made a non-radio-friendly album.

However, I will say Britney became a pop culture icon much quicker than Gaga. With Britney it was instant due to BOMT becoming so massive with the song & video. And that was her debut. Gaga didn't become a pop culture icon until 'Bad romance' but by then she was already on her sophomore album.
Gaga's popularity seems to be fading much faster though. They're both massive pop culture icons.

Gaga's topped Forbes earlier in her career than Britney did.
She's also made way more money than Britney had three years into her career, if you want to use that as a metric.

So has Gaga. And she did it very early in her career.
And the Monster Ball is bigger then any of Britney's tours.

Where did I say Gaga had no celebrity? I said Britney's was bigger. That doesn't mean Gaga has none.

It's impossible to compare Gaga to Britney just like it's impossible to compare Britney to Madonna...
during all of their peaks, the world and pop culture have been completely different so they have to do different things. Madonna and Britney clearly came out as the alpha-artists of the respective generations... As I said before, Gaga is still in that period where she's digging her mark into history, so right now we can't really judge because we don't know where she'll end up.

Britney experienced the same drop in popularity. ONE underperforming album doesn't mean you're done for.
Madonna, Britney, Rihanna, Mariah.. man, everybody has had an underperforming album.
Gaga has in it her to come back.

All of this.
It's too early to crown Gaga as the third major pop icon and influence (along with Madonna and Britney).

I know, I just don't know that I'd agree that Britney was bigger in terms of global name recognition.
