After a promising beginning to their career, The Rapture hit a tough road with their next two studio albums. In 2011, the New York band returned with In The Grace Of Your Love, a dance rock album. The title track off the album is also the best of the lot, featuring a great production and some of Luke Jenner's finest vocals. As the instrumentation cuts out at the end, we are left with Jenner singing with only traces of electronics behind him.
29 Tim Hecker "In The Fog II"
"In The Fog II" is the best electronica song of 2011. Tim Hecker takes you with him in the fog and the results are breathtaking.
28 Lady GaGa "Heavy Metal Lover"
"'Her opening proclamation 'I want your whiskey mouth all over my blonde south' makes her 'LoveGame' lyrics look like they were written for Sesame Street," I wrote back in my review of Lady GaGa's 2011 album Born This Way. That still rings true 7 months later, as does the fact that this is one of Lady GaGa's crowning achievements, up there with "Bad Romance," "Dance In The Dark," and "Poker Face." On "Heavy Metal Lover," GaGa drops the role as The People's Savior and returns to the dance floor. It's a wonderful return, and the greatest moment off her latest disc.
27 Fleet Foxes "Helplessness Blues"
The first single off the album by the same name is great for many reasons: Robin Pecknold's lyrics are some of the best on the disc, the composition is absolutely stunning, and the transition from the first half of the song to "If I had an orchard" section of the song is completely mesmerizing. Fleet Foxes showed promise on their self-titled debut, but they met and exceeded all expectations with their 2011 album.
26 St. Vincent "Cheerleader"
St. Vincent won over indie music lovers' hearts this year with Strange Mercy, and "Cheerleader" is her crowning achievement on the album. Annie Clark does a wonderful job using the cheerleader metaphor to describe a tortured relationship. The song also features one of my favorite musical moments of the year, as Clark sings with such force the line "I-I-I-I-I don't want to be your cheerleader no more." In fact, the more she sings the line, the more emphatic she becomes.
25 Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi featuring Jack White "Two Against One"
A Danger Mouse and Jack White pairing sounded great on paper, and it sounded even better in our stereos. "Two Against One" is their best collaboration, with White defiantly delivering the lines "I get the feeling that it's two against one / I'm already fighting me, so what's another one?"
24 Bobby "Tomb Bloom"
Do yourselves all a favor and click play right above this paragraph right now. Bobby is by far the most overlooked band of 2011. Granted, Partisan Records isn't a huge label, and their debut was very scarcely covered. Yet they are one of my most favorite discoveries of 2011. "Tomb Bloom" is the best song off their self-titled debut, as it starts it's nearly 7 minute run time with some Modest Mouse style guitars, before building up to only slowly fall back down.
23 Zola Jesus "Seekir"
Minnesota's greatest export is undeniably Zola Jesus. In her 2011 album Conatus is her best yet, and "Seekir" is an amazing example of Jesus' talents. Her powerful vocals (powerful enough to land her a feature spot on M83's "Intro") are put in the spotlight, with her looped vocals helping keep the beat.
22 A$AP Rocky "Houston Old Head"
A$AP Rocky comes from New York yet his music sounds like it came straight from Houston. "Houston Old Head" tells the story of A$AP meeting up with an old friend down in Houston to catch some useful advice. Rocky raps about "pimpin bitches since lemon chicken, lo mein," his girlfriend wanting him back in New York, and the less glamorous effects of cocaine. All the while he is the coolest guy in the club... it helps smoking a **** ton of reefer.
21 tUnE-yArDs "Gangsta"
Merril Garbus uses the tUnE-yArDs to express all her emotions, all her musical abilities, in a way no other artist has done in a long time. She's a one-woman band, banging on her bass drum, looping her yelps and hollers, and rapping about her hood and how hardcore it is. And oh year, there's an incredible horn section in the song, too. None of this should make sense, but it does. Once you see the beauty in this, Garbus will change the way you view music.
