The Bottom Line
Fallen, the debut album from Evanescence, casts such a long, powerful shadow that it is difficult at times to imagine the band have only released two studio albums. Now, as a warm-up for the third, they have released the new single "What You Want." It is an outstanding uptempo showcase for the powerhouse vocals of group leader Amy Lee. The song should have no problem rolling to the top of rock radio playlists, and pop programmers would be well advised to welcome the group back as well.
Pros
Powerful, danceable rock beat
Amy Lee's soaring vocals
Lyrics of pain and heartbreak
Cons
No significant negatives

Guide Review - Evanescence - "What You Want"
Rock music is experiencing a bit of a renaissance in the pop music world during the summer of 2011 and the return of Evanescence fits perfectly into the framework. "What You Want," the latest by the band kicks off with a satisfying thwack and soon moves into a danceable guitar-driven mode. Amy Lee's vocals, as strong as ever, soar over the top of the mix. Piano flourishes maintain the gothic feel that has always lurked in the music of Evanescence. "What You Want" will likely please long-term fans of the band while roping in fans of the rock end of the dance spectrum.
It looked like a new album from Evanescence would appear a year ago as produced by Steve Lillywhite. However, news appeared that the band and the producer were not exactly in the same creative space. Now a new, self-titled, release is expected soon with primary production from Nick Raskulinecz. Lyrically, "What You Want" is filled with the angst of a relationship that just can't quite work out despite the presence of love binding the pair together. It is set against an engaging melody that will inspire listeners to join in on the "Hello hello" choruses.
With only two albums to their credit Evanescence have earned seven Grammy Award nominations and won two while selling more than 10 million albums in the US alone. Three songs have made it to the pop top 10. It has been five years since the last full-length album, but there is still a ready and primed audience waiting for the return of Evanescence. "What You Want" is a perfect single to continue the band's legacy.

When hearing that Evanescence were making a comeback I was excited like any other loyal fan, however nervous about not knowing whether they could top their previous work. Evanescence are best known for their song ‘Bring me to life’ which featured in the film Daredevil return with their new single ‘What You Want’, written by Amy Lee, bassist Tim McCord and guitarist Terry Balsamo. It is their first single in over four years and it is worth the wait. This powerful song reminds us why Evanescence is one of the most successful gothic rock bands of this century. This album is said to be about Amy’s relationship with the band, her fans and freedom.
This single was a long time coming after losing and gaining members over the last four years which caused delays in the production and writing of the new album. Like most of their fans, I have been eagerly awaiting this single and wanting to hear this ‘new sound’ which Amy speaks of. The unofficial YouTube video has managed to get 1000′s of hits a day since the release date. A link to the video is below.
Amy Lee has spoken about the new track saying it is about ‘freedom’ with lyrics such as ‘Do what you what you want, you don’t have to lay your life down.’ And ‘I’m everything you can’t control.’ The songs itself is very catchy. The song begins with heavy drumming and powerful operatic vocals from Amy Lee. As previous Evanescence songs it contains the mixture of orchestral violins and piano alongside. The song kicks off with steady beats of a drum and scream like vocals from Amy Lee which is the Evanescence we know and love. However, the almost pop sound to it was not what I expected at all. It did take me a few listens to really get into the song however; it really does remind me why I love Evanescence. Not many gothic rock bands could pull off pop. This single has had contrasting views due to the fairly different sound but I think it is safe to say, Evanescence are set once again to be very successful.
The new album which is self titled is set to be released in October 2011 and are soon to be touring the UK with The Pretty Reckless and Fair to Midland in November.

"Hello! Hello! Remember me?" front woman Amy Lee sings on the Arkansas dark-rock hitmakers' first single in four years. Remember? The song's grinding guitars, massive drums, goth-princess piano frills, and warrior-grrrl vocal rage feel like 2007 all over again. Never forget! B
