Like I said in "moments", rap was really big for me this year. But one of the best albums was this. Released kind of recently (so it could've been a lot higher if I had time to sit with it). I feel like this is one of the best pure rap albums. It's no gimmicks, just straight, pure art. The lyrics are so good, I feel like they need multiple listens to really get it all. But what is the best about this is that unlike similar albums that tend to talk about societal issues, it doesn't get drowned in that. These are guys that have lived through the state of a racialized U.S. and have watched it evolve and change into... something worse? But that's the key, their perspective is so valuable, and it comes out so naturally. You feel like you're getting into the minds of people that have the authority to talk about this. And they do it spectacularly.
Just a bit of a double feature, if you will. Seventeen are sort of the quintessential boyband (at first glance) but really, they're far beyond any of the ****boy groups of the West. Seventeen are TALENT, producing all of their material (lyrics, rap, composition, choreography). Their powerful pop choruses and subtle touches of nostalgia create simply FUN music. I enjoy them for that fact alone. It's good pop music that is enjoyable to listen to and incredibly catchy.
Love&Letter is an album that is sort of Seventeen exploring a bunch of different styles. In that sense it can be a bit incohesive, but they get it right most of the time. That being said, Going Seventeen is kind of the perfect winter album. As a ballad hater, I have to say the ballads on this album >>>.
They're just super talented, super fun. That's all I need tbh.
Mess, so many great albums released May 6. Anyway, Kaytranada is a really cool discovery I made this year. He has such a unique talent and his album creates this vivid landscape of colours and styles, much like the cover art indicates! There are some really really strong instrumental tracks, but the key to this album are the collaborations. I actually kind of wish there were a few more vocal collabs, but overall I still loved this album, though it dropped a couple of spots on my list with age.
