Aside from what I said about getting into college, the main question I was trying to bring awareness to was: Why should others be held accountable for the fact that you could not get a formal education? THAT's what I really want to know. Yes, there may be financial barriers that keep your from attaining a college degree, but at the end of the day, that's not anybody else's problem. It's not Mariah Carey's, it's not Dolly Parton's problem, nor should it be the problem of the millions of Americans who have their checks cut for food stamps.

Excuse me? What the **** is this?
What if your damn house was burning down? If I lived in your area, my taxes would be paying for the firemen to drive up to your home and douse the fire. Why should I be held accountable for you not being able to stop fires from starting in your home? THAT's what I really want to know. Yes, I know it could have been an accident, but that's not anybody else's problem It's not Mariah Carey's, it's not Dolly Parton's problem, nor should it be the problem of the millions of Americans who have their checks cut for fire department service.
God, did you even ****ing think when you wrote that?

Everyone besides those with severe dissabities have the opportunity to succeed. Yes it's harder for some but it's possible.

But then the children still suffer. They didn't do anything, it's more than moral to help them out.

1. Quoted from this article on MSN: 8-ways-to-go-to-college-for-free
Quote:
1. You attend an 'automatic scholarship' school
Students at Macaulay Honors College, part of the City University of New York system, don't stress about the high price of tuition. That's because theirs is free. At Macaulay and a handful of other service academies, work colleges, single-subject schools and conservatories, every student receives a full merit-based tuition scholarship for all four years. Macaulay students also receive a laptop and $7,500 in "opportunities funds" to pursue research, service experiences, study abroad programs and internships.

Food Stamps, like all government welfare programs, will make some people lazy and dependent. It's the risk the system takes.
That makes the question not, "does it happen?", but rather, "is it worth it?"
The answe is yes. It is absolutely worth it to provide for people in difficult times, even knowing that some people will take advantage of the system.
I mean, we can take steps to minimize the number of people able to take perpetual advantage of the system. On the other hand, there's not much you can do for a person after they starve to death.

This thread reeks of '**** you, I got mine'.
Do you not realize that the same food stamp services would be available to you and your family if you started to encounter trouble?

you are so privileged and you don't even know.
Not everyone has access to a library. Good luck finding one in a dilapidated urban area.

I'm not saying I want little kids to die on the street. I'm just saying some responsibility has to be taken.

Sure, I'll "try again".
Do you think libraries contain every single book that ever existed? No? Oh. Well then.

No its not. I would agree with you if the US was an equal country but it is not. The US is highly unequal. Not everyone has the same opportunities. I'm sure that person you pass by mopping the floors at your local fast food joint is working his or her ass everyday, maybe even working two jobs just to get by. If that person could barely afford the costs of living how will they be able to afford school? What if that person has a family or is a single parent? Now tell me, how will that person be able to send their child off to college to better themselves when there is no money. The reality is, not everything is that easy. Life is hard, and there will be dirt poor people and super rich people. That's just the way things are. And we don't have to accept it.

You don't know everyone's reason for being on food stamps. You don't know their life and haven't experienced their struggles. It's easy for you to say they should get a job but do you know how hard it is to find one? Most places aren't even hiring and if they are the minimum wage they pay is not enough to live off of.
If you're able to live without government assistance , more power to you. However don't apply your situation/experiences to everyone else's because they are NOT the same.

For the FAFSA (which is government money) you need to fill that **** out PRONTO and that means you need to provide the government with your tax information. Now how would you do that if you can't even afford to pay for it and have no records of it?
PLEASE. And to actually succeed you need to go to an "accredited" school because non-accredited school education (which are basically the free ones this article states) is just as good as no education since the degrees you obtain from them get you nowhere.

I'm sure you don't want that. But giving someone food stamps doesn't automatically make them lazy and it definitely won't make you not need to work. Responsibility still needs to be taken.

I never said life wasn't hard. It is. But it is possible to succeed under those conditions. Is it ideal? Clearly not. But it's possible .

I'm hardly even talking about foodstamps anymore. I think we've veared off from that topic somewhat.

And it will be even more possible with food stamps. That's one less struggle, one less burden, one less mental challenge a person will have to overcome

This logic
Do you have a job?
You must not know that the money generated for food stamps is cut out of the checks of the working, including mine.
That's why I'm worrying. Because it's affecting me.

If food stamps help someone get to college that's great. I'm for it in those cases.
