30. Gold
– Marina and the Diamonds
Shockingly “Gold” did terrible in the recent Marina and the Diamonds discography rate on here, like in the bottom 5 of her released tracks? Seriously, the ****? I’ve never heard another song like “Gold”, I don’t even know how to describe the song, but it’s amazing. It’s just this funky mid-tempo bop, and I guess it’s about money and success and how meaningless it all is. Well it could be, I don’t really know. Froot has so many poignant and lyrical moments that just hit me. I mean “Gold” with the lyrics:
“Don’t think I want what I used to want, don’t think I need what I used to need.”
Something about that just gets me. People think they know me, people think I haven’t changed in years, but I have and I think about a lot of things differently. It’s a shame how even close friends and family can think of you as just the same person, when many qualities shift.
