yikes, this is even more commercial than matangi 'foreign friend', 'freedun', & 'survivor' are shaping up to be the worst tracks in her discog, with 'survivor' especially sounding laughably terrible

'ali r u ok' & 'talk' sound promising though, and i like the 'visa' rework

did i ever say they were bad because of how commercial they are? no.

i know it's probably too early to judge them, but all i'm getting from these previews is paint-by-number matangi rehashes (all my people, visa), stale ass attempts at a hit (finally, freedun), and demos that should have never left her hard drive (foreign friend, survivor ).

i say this as a long time fan, mind you. it just makes me sad how far back she's regressed creatively since /\/\ /\ Y /\.

I honestly agree with all of this. The best songs are Swords and Borders because they actually sound fresh for her. It took forever for these tracks to come out and the majority of the snippets sound like rushed demos... I'm sure they will grow on me but this is what I hear for the now.

I get what some of you are saying about how commercial some of tracks sound (particularly Freedun and Finally), but to me they sound like bops and her flow and lyricism has improved massively over how it was on some Matangi tracks.

Arular and Kala are two of the biggest influences on current music today, Diplo's work is huge and the media has a much bigger interest in refugees/the current Syrian crisis, etc. M.I.A. has been doing all of this for years and it might be nice for her to get some more mainstream recognition for her work and activism.

I really liked MAYA and Matangi, but I think this is gonna beat them to be up there with her first two albums.

A lot of these songs give me extreme Arular vibes. Do you understand what that means?

This album has moved back to concepts she's always been best at tackling.

idk why some people are saying it sounds too commercial when I'm pretty sure she said herself a couple of times since Matangi that this will be a bit more straight forward release.

And it still sounds like her best record since Kala imo

The only snippets I'm not liking are Foreign Friend, Finally and Survivor. I sort of like Survivor in a way though, just because it's so unlike her- emotional and happy and calm etc. So like, on a meta level it's sweet but in terms of how it sounds I'm not feeling it.

The whole album is really chill for an MIA album actually. The anger and aggressiveness isn't there any more, which is kinda poignant.
