I'm glad Gaga isn't offended. Props to her for not writing a scathing open letter to her ATRL haters.
The fact that she doesn't care makes it a lot worse, you do realize that? It's proving that she's culturally insensitive towards the matter.
I'll let tumblr users (that aren't stans, one of them being Muslim) explain this for you.
Why wearing a burqa is culturally offensive
Quote:
The burqa has a special place in Islamic culture. Lady Gaga writing a song about the burqa (and it’s probably not about the burqa it’s probably about something controversial~*~*~ to gain attention) is like if I wanted to write a song about, say, greek people ****ing sheep.
it’s rude, offensive and disrespectful to people who DO wear it. It has nothing to do with “freedom of speech” or being “treated equally”, it has to do with treating people like ****ing people and not like treated like a scapegoat, because look how oppressed those women are.

I don’t think your anon realizes that *most* muslim women don’t want the Burqa to be abolished, it’s a big part of their religion. I think everyone needs to stop trying to be saviours on this matter. If someone is happy in their religion then leave them be but when someone actually cries out for help, that’s the time to help. Lady Gaga wearing a burqa was wrong. I felt disgusted when I saw her do that. She changed what is a modest RELIGIOUS outfit into one that was sleazy and clearly only used as a shock factor. That’s just my two cents and everyone can disagree with me

At the risk of sounding pseudo-political, the burqa and “ratchet” are examples of two cultures she does not belong to, nor I think she fully understands, and are pushing them into pop culture where they don’t need to be.
This may be an extreme illustration, but I only shutter at the thought of how many people will follow suit and misuse “ratchet” because Gaga made a song out of it. (I’ve already heard it being misused on my own college campus, ugh). Or that it’s cool for a burqa to become a superficial fashion accessory.
There may be people who done it before Gaga (such as fashion designers trying to use the burqa) but not to this capacity where everybody is watching her every move. Maybe she’s doing it because everybody is watching her, but that only puts her more in harm’s way.
Everything she does is a perpetual game of “Inception”

You can yell and scream and deny it all you want, but Gaga is not being culturally appropriate here.
