They probably mean mainline as most people skipped spin-offs like BBS and DDD. KHII was pathetically easy - though KHI had its fair share of difficulty.
Girl, the battles were damn near impossible when you play it outside of easy. Why would you be excited about this?
Why wouldn't you be? Who plays a game just to progress? I'd rather play a game that challenges me… KHII wasn't that; KHI was somewhat that; but BBS was totally that! I can't wait!

KHI had it's fair share of sticky situations. The last Riku boss battle , Ursula, and other bosses can be a pain if you don't do a bit of grinding.
KHII didn't help it's cause with having Mickey save you every now and then either , the only challenging boss battle I had in that game was Demnyx.
I thought KHII was harder than KH1. I actually had trouble with Mulan's world and Tron's world and the end-game whereas I breezed through KH1.
The hardest thing for me in either game is the material collecting. It took me forever to destroy all those special heartless.
COM is far-and-away the hardest in terms of gameplay. The limited level up bonuses, enemy encounters and attacks all kill me. I can't beat Cloud in the Olympus Coliseum.

Gonna have to replay it soon tho. The only trophies I am missing are the normal and beginner play through trophies which makes the whole thing kinda dumb to me.

Because when you are a 12 year old child and on Day 6 of trying to beat Demyx, you just want to get it over with.
I remember Xaldin being the hardest boss in KHII excluding Sephiroth, who I have never been able to defeat on either game
