Even if for profit drug companies have NO interest in developing a cure (which I don't think is totally true) there is still plenty of non-profit research going on that could lead to that result as well.

There are lots of funny things our government and people do. If you ever have time, take a look at "How to Survive a Plague" on netflix. It's a documentary on what the gay community/hiv/Aids community had to do and go through to get the government to even acknowledge that HIV/AIDS was a real problem, and to get more treatments through.
Anyways, it's another one of those points that I will forfeit for lack of more concrete information.
