Except for Coldplay and Jepsen I like all of the other artists. I can't stand 50WTSG though, I think Drive By is miles better. Brighter Than The Sun is so underrated
If I make a suggestion, listen to Tristian's song Madly. It was the first song I heard of hers and fell in love with.
I checked it out and it's giving me Alanis teas. Tristan is definitely a very talented artist.

I was wondering how long it would take for someone to notice. Well I like Call Me Maybe, but just not quite enough to include it, if Id've made a Bubbling Under chart it would've been there.

For me it worked the opposite way, I really liked CMM at first, then not quite so much when I kept hearing it everywhere I went.

Actually, I think it's more accurate to argue that "Hold On" is the only song most people have heard from Alabama Shakes.
I have to admit, though...I love the video version of the song way more than the album version. I mean, WAY more.
Hold On never really broke into the mainstream so the rock fans probably know it while many pop fans might not.
Here's a band everyone seems to have forgotten about since they had their two hits Somewhere Only We Know and Is It Any Wonder in the mid 2000s. However I love their music and try to keep up with new releases from them, and this one is a real gem. The lyrics and the production are so uplifting, it almost sounds like a rock ballad from the 80s. The only other song from this year that gave me a similar feel was Runaways by The Killers, which we will get to later on But yeah, I really love this song, just as good as Keane's two hits and I wish they could be successful again. This is the only song by Keane in the list.
119 The All-American Rejects "Walk Over Me"
Poor AAR. They flopped so badly this year and I can't quite understand why, they stuck to the same pop-rock sound that made them huge during the Move Along era. Just lack of promo I guess. But on the topic of this song, I thought it was a really interesting single choice. Definitely more rock-based than their previous efforts and I could tell from the beginning that it wouldn't fare well. I do like the musical direction they chose for this song though and the video was just so cute (even if Tyson wasn't). This is the first of two songs by The All-American Rejects in the list.
118 Nelly Furtado "Big Hoops (Bigger the Better)"
Definitely one of the more...polarizing lead singles released in 2012. Some loved it and thought it was so catchy, while others hated it and thought it was so annoying. I wouldn't classify myself in either of those groups, though I do think the song gets too much undeserved hate. Probably because of all the Illuminati suspicions based on the video and the song playing backwards It wasn't a strong lead single choice, but it's still a great song to jam to, and I actually like Nelly's tone in the song, it shows how unique and special her voice can be. This is the only song by Nelly Furtado in the list.
117 Mary J. Blige f/Drake "Mr. Wrong"
The R&B Queen (well, one of them ) came back in 2011, and out of all the singles she ended up releasing this one was the most successful. Maybe it was because of the Drake feature, but whatever the reason I'm glad it was this one, it's by far the strongest. Her vocals sound great paired with the track and she looks sexy and classy as ever in the music video. Unfortunately, while being a very solid R&B track, there was nothing that special about the song, and so I lost interest in it after a while. I hope she can release stronger material for her next album. This is the only song by Mary J. Blige in the list.
116 B.o.B "So Good"
What always bothers me about B.o.B is that he has the skill and the motivation to be a great rapper, but he never seems to find the right material. Probably the closest he came was with Airplanes, but then he took a step backwards with Magic and another bigger step backwards with Don't Let Me Fall. While it's a better song than the two I just mentioned, So Good was yet another misstep. For a lead pop single, he should have chosen a collaboration with a pop artist. So Good is definitely more like third or fourth single material. It was only a moderate hit, but then again Both of Us flopped and that was with Taylor Swift so who knows what can happen. Anyways this song is really cute and catchy and I always loved to jam to it in the spring. This is the first of two songs by B.o.B in the list.
115 Ne-Yo "Let Me Love You (Until You Learn to Love Yourself)"
I feel like the majority of ATRL is very hypocritical when it comes to this song. Criticizing it for how generic and bland it is when their fave has likely released something even more generic and blander in the past year Honestly it's just because Ne-Yo is a male artist, that's all there is to it. And yes, he did sell out to make a generic dance-pop song, but it's possible for R&B artists to do that without completely abandoning their fanbase, and at least in my judgment Ne-Yo got it right. The song isn't overproduced at all, Ne-Yo's vocals really shined in the verses, and when it came time for the breakdown I felt like it was really well-executed and well-placed in the song. I don't expect or want Ne-Yo to continue releasing these type of singles, but for a one-time thing LMLY was pretty damn good. This is the only song by Ne-Yo in the list.
114 Matchbox Twenty "Overjoyed"
The second single from the Hot AC kings' comeback album, Overjoyed, is one of the cutest most lovey-dovey songs I've heard in a long time. I mean, the lyrics basically ooze compliments for this unknown girl. "The smile on your face like summer", "hearing your voice I'm overjoyed", "and if you want we can share this life", etc. These type of songs can be very corny sometimes, but I don't feel like Matchbox Twenty overdid it, they did it just the right amount to make you say "Awwww" without making you puke. I'm definitely here for this change of pace from an upbeat first single to a slower second single, unfortunately it doesn't seem like the public is This is the first of two songs by Matchbox Twenty in the list.
113 Andy Grammer "Fine By Me"
After breaking through to the mainstream with Keep Your Head Up in 2011, Andy Grammer was back in 2012 to show everyone he wasn't a one-hit wonder with the infectious tune Fine By Me. I love this song so much, Andy's music is always bouncy and happy and makes you feel good. I wonder how he gets the motivation to write such happy music, he must be a huge optimist in real life The only problem I have with this song is that it sounds extremely similar to KYHU. I was worried Andy might be a one-trick pony, but then he released Miss Me and that shut me up, we'll see that later on This is the first of two songs by Andy Grammer in the list.
112 Theory of a Deadman "Hurricane"
Another band that had a couple hits, then faded away into obscurity. I feel like maybe this wouldn't have happened if they were bigger in their prime, All or Nothing especially is an amazing song and deserved so much more than #99 on the Hot 100. But I can't change the past, all I know and care about is that they're still releasing great music. The song is good by itself, but it took on a whole new meaning when I watched the video. It helped me understand what the lyrics meant, or at least one interpretation of them (getting caught in the "hurricane" of fame and not knowing how to manage your wealth). Also the video has Didi Benami in it. It's nice to see that she didn't completely disappear after American Idol, plus she's really hot lol. This is the only song by Theory of a Deadman in the list.
111 Usher "Numb"
It's weird that this song would come in the same set as LMLY, because in the write-up for that song I talked about how an R&B artist needs skill to have a dance-pop hit while still retaining their fanbase. Well Usher messed up, not with this song, but with the trashy Scream. Such a generic meaningless song with absolutely nothing to offer. Fortunately he showed with Numb that he could do dance-pop right. It's very similar to LMLY in terms of production, more stripped back in the verses allowing Usher's voice to shine. The chorus isn't humongous and catchy, but I still think it really works for the type of song that Numb is. Unfortunately this song flopped, the US must have something wrong with their taste in music This is the first of two songs by Usher in the list.
On the subject of LMLY, I personally don't hate the song. (It wouldn't even be Bubbling Under for me, if I did ) I just find it irritating that it's positioned in the top ten with rather minimal sales, which has more to do with Billboard's broken formula than the song itself, honestly.
Numb... I'm not sure why, but it in terms of chart positioning, it turned out to be an all-career low for Usher. Which may be more due to the agonizingly slow de-saturation of dance-pop in the mainstream, which... I fear my spell trouble for some artists in 2013.
Personally, I think "Out Of My Mind" would have been a better overall lead single than the title track, and "Both Of Us" should have been the pop lead instead of "So Good"... But with more substance than two lines for Taylor's hook. Though, when you think about it, the "Airplanes" hook was rather simplistic as well.
