Yeah Side To Side is cute but it's annoying that it's a much better hit than Into You and Dangerous Woman
I want to like Poppy but Money is her only bop
Say It Love this song so much
Great description for Cheap Thrills & I totally agree. Also enjoy ATA, Florida, Say It (love this one) & Whatever (though I enjoyed about half of the album more than it).
Cheap Thrills
Money is a cute song from That Poppy. I've gone back to it on YouTube from time to time.
Side to Side is great but I liked it more before it was a single. I'm glad she finally got a big hit out of the era, though.
Like most of the singles from 99.9% this didn't struck me immediately, not until I realised what it was sampling, Brazilian icon Gal Costa's "Pontos de Luz". And it's awesome that a "popular" artist like him would listen to her! And the video is super adorable too.
Genre: Art Pop, Drone, Drone Metal
The Body's music is well known for being extremely... extreme. Loud. Abrasive. At some points, unlistenable, and I really loved them for that. Then why does this song sounds like a 50 Words-era Kate Bush collab with Sunn O))) (not complaining though, this is awesome).
Genre: Trap, Glitch Hop, UK Bass
This song is like if TNGHT made music in 2078. That should tell you everything about it.
(Also I didn't really prepare a write-up for this because Kiiara's "Gold" was supposed to be here, until I discovered she is/was working with Dr. Luke. Cancelled.)
Genre: Ambient Pop, IDM, Progressive Electronic
While it has some of the most gorgeous album covers I have ever seen, the Mark Pritchard album was slightly disappointing. Perhaps because I expected him to make Global Communications-like stuff, but really this song isn't bad at all, and a Thom Yorke feature is, like, a cherry on top.
Genre: Noise Pop, Electropop, Noise Rock
The transition between the verse and the chorus is kinda bad and sounds awkward. But I don't know why would anyone care about that all that much other than the fact than some 30-year-old YouTuber pointed that out. But who cares, this song would have made the 14-year-old edgy kid inside me happy as **** and that's everything that should matter (to me)!
Genre: Art Pop, Synthpop, City Pop
This song made by Russia's Kate Shilonosova (NV) sounds like a mix of Laurie Anderson, Regina Spektor and old-school Japanese city pop. One of the best stuff Orange Milk (a.k.a. the label she's "signed" to) has ever released, honestly.
Genre: Minimal Wave, Tech House, Acid Techno
It seems like on '25 25', Factory Floor have totally embraced their sound as a dance music outfit. While the results can be a little bit mixed, this song is fantastic. The video is a bit monotone (although I get that was the point), but it captures the feeling of the track.
Genre: Pop Rap, Trap Rap, Contemporary R&B
Earlier this year I started taking Icelandic lessons. Ég elskađi ţađ! But even though my knowledge of it is still limited (I can barely comprehend anything he's saying), I started listening to Icelandic hip hop for... whatever reason. Who'd knew this would be so lit!
Genre: Alternative R&B, UK Bass, Trap Rap
Does a collaboration between Young Thug, Death Grips and Kelela in a dystopian UK sound interesting to you? Well, you're in good luck! Because this Jam City-produced track is beautiful. And the Father-directed video is too.
Genre: Art Pop, Electropop, Synthpop
I can't believe this was literally meant to be a Rihanna demo. Thankfully, Oneohtrix Point Never (dad) and ANOHNI (mom) saved this from becoming a rihject and turned it into something beautiful, although important and political. One of the highlights from 'HOPELESSNESS'.
Genre: Art Pop, Nueva Canción Latinoamerica, Folktronica
This song is so pretty. It's simple both lyrically and musically, but in the hook she doesn't even sing in Spanish, she sings in Rapa Nui, a language from the Easter Islands spoken by about 800 people. It was co-produced by Chairlift's Caroline Polachek, and her sister is one of the dancers in the video.
Genre: Electropop, Contemporary R&B, Dance-Pop
'Glory' was... kinda mediocre. But this is one of the better tracks on the record, and adding Tinashe to it was actually the best thing ever. And it's also worth noting that this is her best video since 2011 ("Hold It Against Me"). I just wish, you know, it was successful.
Genre: Alternative R&B, Experimental Hip Hop, Downtempo
I love the original. But there's something that's oddly fascinating about Lil Yachty (a mainstream-ish rapper) working two underground electronic legends (Dean Blunt and Arca), and his presence on the track is actually really good, he isn't really rapping he's just mumbling like a ghost in the back of it and it's just gorgeous.
20 PENCE 20 PENCE 20 PENCE
Genre: Electropop, Glitch Pop, Synthpop
A bop! One of the best tracks on '99 Cents', no wonder Charli XCX was involved in this (idk if as a background singer, a co-writer or whatever). The video is kinda lame but we're all going to ignore that, right?
Genre: Experimental Rock, Inuit Vocal Games, Throat Singing
This isn't something easy to listen to. Starting with a Jenny Hval-esque spoken word intro, Tanya's music slowly turns more and more insane, helped by the atonal guitars and strings and her throat singing, and the fact that this song is about 8 minutes long. This song is truly an experience.
