HAHA the haters in here. Haters will easily select all of the above. I love it.
Keep it coming, guys.
It didn't really "underperform" either, but this discussion has been brought up many, many times and its pointless. I'm so tired of it.
The main reason I will say that the era didn't do so well is because of Judas, easily. Judas takes the cake.
If Marry the Night was the first single and Born This Way was 2nd or 3rd, I guarantee the era would have done way better.
People were ready to slaughter her first single since she hyped it up so much (also her fault), and the small similarity it had with Express Yourself got people OFF. People were ready to pick the **** out of it. I bet you anything if BTW came out as a single much later on, 80% of that backlash wouldn't have happened.
As much as you hate her, the similarity really isnt that strong between EY and BTW and I think anyone can admit it.
TIK TOK & CALIFORNIA GURLS have more in common, and that is a god damn fact. Yet people didn't say anything cause, as it has been pointed out before, people were just waiting to bring down Gaga's first single.

As much as I hate antagonistic "**** you haters" posts, this was actually pretty good. I hope people don't skip over it

Because she said it was going to be the album for this generation, and it turned out to be a mediocre pop album, worse than The Fame and TFM. She overhyped it wayyyy too much.
Half of the albums on the album sound like recycled songs from 80's and 90's pop singers. The only good songs on the album didn't get proper promotion and she didn't go full out with her plan to experiment.
Bloody Mary and Heavy Metal Lover are GENIUS songs. They are experimental and different from was she had done in the past. An album full of songs like this would have changed the music industry if she actually took a risk and executed it all the way.
Also, AMERICANO would have been amazing as a ballad, but she added those corny electro synch elements to it. Every song on the album with the exception of BM, HML, and Y&I had way too much going on and took away from the songs.

agreed. she failed to release the best songs. I think tbh that "Fashion of his Love" would have been huge, and if she would've had a simple, sort of cutesy video, it would've been one of her classic songs.

i never really understood the express yourself/born this way comparison, but Fashion of his love = I Wanna Dance With Somebody with the key change and all .. i like the song but i think comparisons would have kept it from truly smashing

The look was so off putting. It made me not even want to bother with the CD. Reasons I miss The Fame/Monster.

If I was part of her team this is what I would've done.
The Tracklisting would've been:
1. Government Hooker
2. Heavy Metal Lover
3. Sheibe
4. Electric Chapel
5. You & I
6. Born This Way
7. Marry The Night
8. Judas
9. Bloody Mary
10. Americano (Ballad-Piano Only Version)
Singles:
1. You & I (Opened Grammys in February with performance just like she did it at the VMAS debuting song)
2. Americano (Released beginning of April with controversial video about immigration and same-sex marriage laws)
3. Judas (Released at the End of April)
----Album released Mid-May
4. Born This Way (Released Early June with a much more inspirational video and not that desperate **** she released)
---- Judas and Born This Way conquer the summer
5. Heavy Metal Lover (Released in August with a sexy/provocative video)
6. Bloody Mary (released in October)

BTW
TEOG
HML(performed at the vmas)
You and I
Then either ****, Hair, or Americano.
End Era...
ahh the era would have turned out differently...at least singles wise.

It was all the way the singles were handled tbh.
BTW was a great lead single, but the Express Yourself controversy along with the whole look of it was very off-putting to people.
Judas is one of the best songs on the album imo, but the religious themes timing up with an Easter release was once again, off-putting for people.
The Edge Of Glory, the best single from the album imo, only became the 3rd single because it was released as a promo single and accidentally smashed. It was supposed to be MTN.
You & I was the only single that was handled pretty well I think. It showed a different side of her. But the video was too much of a cluster ****. It needed a real director.
Marry The Night was just too much. She was overexposed by this point. 5 singles in less than a year. And tbh i don't think ppl liked the 13 minute video. Too long.
Also she released too many songs before the actual album dropped. She should have released BTW later or released the album sooner.

What It really shocks me is that she did a MEGA- promotion campaign , pictures of the albums on Subways, streets, restaurants, I think even on the toilets of the bathroom.... Performances on a million TV shows , $0.99 discount, etc etc etc ...... and with all that it only sold +5M copies according to Mediatraffic chart , thats around 10M less than her previous album
She should take a break

Sums up all i wanted to say. Thanks for doing the job!

She announced the album like something from out of this world and in the end it was just an OK pop album

The music. It just wasn't good. I loved Fame Monster but BTW had way too many electronica elements and not enough quality songwriting.
The music videos. There were all so similarly strange that no one cared anymore, and no one could tell them apart.
And thirdly, that ridiculously ugly blue hair.

Nope, that wasn't a factor, since it was good.

The era wasn't even that bad, all things considered (it obviously could have been a lot better though). In comparison to her last smash eras, definitely. By itself though, it really didn't do as badly as a lot of people hoped it would have. Keep in mind that her last eras cushioned the blow so she's going to have to bring it next era. I think this is what could be summed up from everything in this thread.
Also, the music wasn't bad. It wasn't full of Just Dances or Poker Faces but to say the music, as a whole, was bad, you just need to get the **** out. It has some misses for sure but don't lump the plenty of gems the album brought in with them.

Even when she under performs, she was the best selling pop "it" girl.. Some you girls are still depressed and seething.

People always seem to forget that everyone has bad eras. When it comes to BTW, people exaggerated how "bad" it was. The album (minus Bad Kids) was great, the only terrible video was TEOG. BTW's, Judas' and Y&I's videos were good. MTN was meh. The only mistakes were the image and some creative decisions.
