And unlike the sell-out pop girls, Lana followed up a hugely successful era with a dark alternative rock album that was very personal and even less conventional. And it still sold 1.3 million WW and went Gold in the US. And it was critically-acclaimed and made two-dozen best-of-the-year lists by big critics.
And as for those saying Ellie or Lorde are bigger, call me when one of those two sells 5-6 million WW...with an alternative album. It's not mainly about single hits, but about album cohesiveness, quality, longevity, and album sales. Neither artist has become the sort of modern icon that elicits obsessiveness that Lana seems to already be.
