I don't think anyone wants to be "exactly" like Britney like they do with Madonna, but that doesn't mean she's not influential. Her influence was more profound in inspiring female artists to strive for those "big" moments that people will remember in popular culture. The music videos, the performances - everything on a large scale. Britney kind of took what Madonna did in terms of passion and moulded it towards her own artistry.
|
I wasn't aware people wanted to be "exactly" like Madonna either. I also thought this was covering1998...not 1983 present.

I think the current Beyonce commercial shows alot. I mean she wore 5 of her most known outfits and only 2 are really known. I love that gif of the commercial because it proves a basic point.

I know I remember the artist that dared to speak against even before having a full fledged hit. I remember Avril lavigne being on Rolling Stone deemed the Britney slayer yet not one word in the magazine had Britney's name. The impact of the title to sell magazines and create anti-images was real. In addition to all the blonde pop girls that were supposed to focus on their voices and not get sexier and then year after year Britney's plan worked and we saw how some of pop girls starting getting six packs, showing more skin so on and so forth.

LOL. Jay z put Rihanna as the Bajan Beyonce and it didn't work until they changed her image to have more britney and rihanna undertones.
Rihanna is the ultimate example of who's influence blossomed careers.

When it comes to capturing the world with what they do however, Britney's power outweighs Beyoncé. She's almost like this archetype for pop culture. The way she made everyone *obsessed* with her in the late 90s-early 00s was phenomenal.

Yay, image wise beyonce is ultimate when it comes to the clean ice princess image.
Performance wise she only has 1 or 2 memorable performances. She has been upstaged by Britney, Pink and other pop stars when they both performed on the same show.
Britney's influence is always headlining for both good and bad.

I don't know why Beyonce fans want to go there.
They should realize that it will take beyonce her 5th/6th album to even clear 14M certifications in the US alone. Britney did that with her first album.
We are talking about someone that hasn't cleared 14M in her main land and Britney is undercertified at 34M.
It's the weakest argument. It's almost like saying Norah Jones is more influential than Beyonce's first album as she tripled the sales of Beyonce.
It's almost as weak as saying that Mariah and Madonna's struggle to go past gold now in their career makes them less influential than Rihanna or Katy perry.
People need to look at the package deal: Influence, impact, pop culture moments, media, sales, music, memorable videos/performances etc.

Switch Christina with Britney, and 1998 with 1997, and the statement would be right. Even Britbrit stays following Xtina like becoming a tv judge, becoming way more sexual (after Lady Marmalade, Brit followed X's dirrty image with Slave), only working with Linda Perry because of the legend, etc, etc, etc.
|
Its a shame but D.M.F makes these statements that are so wrong but are comical.
1) Xtina followed Paula and JLO to become a tv judge. The similarities there. They all struggled to tour, get a top 10 hit, a #1 album, a #1 single and a certified album.
Britney toured, scored plenty of top 10s, plenty of #1 albums and singles and certified albums.
Britney is the few artist like Maroon 5 guy, ceelo, Nicki who were successful before the show and were not struggling artist needing the show for relevancy.
2) Wow, so people were calling Britney sexual with her debut album, the videos and the magazine pics etc. Lady Marmalade was a costume and Pink showed more skin than Christina so your point is such a reach. What isn't a reach is that Britney did the slave video which had a huge impact and then a year later Christina tried to outdo her (once again) and her image has been tarnished ever since.
Britney does Pepsi (it becomes one of their most successful campaigns) then Xtina does Coke. Crickets?
Britney does Schechers (sp.) successful 2001/2 then Xtina does schecers (sp.)...
Britney does a mag shoot during her pregnancy christina does it the next year.
Other examples as well.

Kii...
People need to understand what influence embodies. It's not about hitting the highest note. I mean there are artist I'm not too fond of but I even have to respect their influence.
Social media and pop culture moments alone Britney is the most influential of the last 15 years.
If Britney did the current Beyonce commercial she wouldn't just have 2 of the 5/6 outfits recognized. She could use her Baby one more time outfit, Oops (video or vma performance), Slave (video or VMA performance), 2003 AMAs performance which Beyonce was INFLUENCED by that as well, Toxic video, Piece of me/Gimme more, Circus/Womanizer and Till the world ends attire and people will remember 90% of the looks and images that have been copied in other forms of media.
Britney's influence on music is packaged into pop culture, social media, personality, image and other facets (so that she doesn't have to try hard 15 years into her career to seem more relatable and put out try hard music to connect to a specific audience):
1) Baby one more time-(
Teen pop/Bubble gum pop) girl next door image being youthful, effervescent playful teen innocence and the spirit of being young and having fun.
Songs geared mainly towards this image:
BOMT, Crazy, Sometimes/
Born to make you happy
2) Oops...I did it again-(
Cheezy/faux edge overproduced pop) good girl with a wink (trend: The overproduced vocals that Cher made popular in a flash with 'Believe' Britney brought it to a teen audience and put out multiple songs instead of one and is credited and often discredited for that trend when some artist not as talented (t pain) and some more talented (chris brown/usher) and others started using the overproduced vocals in the mid 00s.
Songs geared mainly towards this image:
Oops (if like 2000 satisfaction/oops mashup)..., lucky (not performed but in between when she changes costumes like the interlude of Break the ice on the circus tour and showing how she was on top of the world,
Stronger
THE SHIFT
3) Britney-(
urban pop/teen angst crossroads) Coming of age transition phase from girl to woman (trend: Slave for you was a game changer song and video wise before them other girls were adding urban producers and features Slave for you was the perfect blend of urban pop without being trihard as was Boys until they ruined it with the video game beat remix.
Songs geared mainly towards this image:
Overprotected, Slave, Not a girl
STEPPING OUT INTO YOUNG ADULTHOOD
4) In the zone-(
underground dance/vibey trancey and electro pop) her college party girl experimental phase Her free spirit, college, experimental image: Phase where she starts to deal with real experiences and real emotions/pain (MY FAVE because I was a sophomore in college and this was like everything to me) (trend: underground dance pop: Trend: When everyone was a pop artist featuring a rapper and the radio was dominated by urban music, she took the dance route. Billboard dedicated an article for 'Toxic' and 'Hey Ya' from outkast being game changers
Songs geared mainly towards this image:
Toxic, Me against the music, Everytime I wouldn't mind her performing Breathe on me, Brave new girl (not performed but change in costumes where video showing the shift in her public image) and touch of my hand too.
NOT SO GOOD, PITFALL/DOWNFALL YEARS
4-5) Greatest hits-MP:
(electronic pop leftover) Her burnt out, rebellious image where she made declarative stateements with
'My prerogative' (not performed mashup between breaks showing the change and fall from grace)) and 'Do somethin'
OUT OF CONTROL YEARS
5) Blackout-
(european, dark, edgy dance pop) Her dark, out of control, girl gone wild post-rebellious/self destruction image
Trend: after urban pop artists like Justin, Beyonce Fergie and Nelly were big with urban pop sound, Britney bought it back to dance pop. Songs like Freakshow with elements of dubstep, Piece of me innovative sounds and the album as a whole
Songs geared mainly towards this image:
piece of me, gimme more Extras: including Get naked and freakshow in there (with STRONGER dubstep breakdowns) Use Freakshow for costume change and show the coverage of the complete meltdown and the craziness.
THE COMEBACK YEAR
6) Circus- (conglomerate of her strengths/anthem pop) the comeback lessons learned from a jaded woman - Her comeback phase where it was really a compilation of her strongest themes from albums 1-5. Trend: Before single ladies and other female anthems as well as katy perry, lady gaga pop splashes...she brought back the pop anthems
Songs geared mainly towards this image:
Circus, IUSA,
Womanizer, Extra: Not to perform but either use kill the lights or out from under preferably the latter documenting the comeback that put her back to the good graces.
6-7 The Singles collection- Another GH album but 3 had rave, dance influences bringing back the 90s sound that artist having been using for the past 2 years. Song geared:
3 and Radar LOL.
THE HERE TO STAY YEAR
7) Femme fatale
(dubstep/modern, club dance pop) It was cohesive for what it was. She's credited for starting the trend of dubstep now which Rihanna, Madonna, Justin Bieber, LMFAO, Nicki, Taylor swift and others have used since...songs geared mainly towards this image:
Till the world ends, Hold it against me, I wanna go
In between eras:
S&M remix where she forgot to blow her nose before laying down vocals
Britney's influence gave Rihanna another #1 single.
and Scream and shout where she graciously feature Will.i.am so that he could score his biggest hit ever as a solo artist. She's a giver.
His biggest hit in his entire solo career was #1 in 53/55 countries on itunes around the world which was a record at the time.
8th album will have yet another influential sound/image and pop culture moment for sure.
